Hotel Description
You know, when I first pulled up to the 2 Bedroom Gem on Glass Street in Essendon – that’s postcode 3040, just a quick hop from Tullamarine Airport – I was honestly surprised by how tucked-away and peaceful it felt. Melbourne’s northwest suburbs can get a bit hectic, especially with the airport traffic buzzing nearby, but this spot on Glass St is in one of those quiet residential pockets where you hear more birds than planes. I mean, it’s not right under the flight path or anything – well, maybe a distant hum during peak hours, but nothing that kept me up at night. The place itself is this charming two-bedroom apartment (or maybe it’s more like a serviced unit? Anyway, it’s got that homey vibe without feeling like a sterile hotel room), and checking in was a breeze – no front desk drama, just a key code texted ahead, which is perfect if you’re landing late from a flight. I remember stepping inside and immediately noticing the fresh, clean scent, like someone had just aired it out with eucalyptus or something Aussie – subtle, not overpowering.
What really makes this gem stand out, though, is how it’s set up for real travelers who want more than a crash pad. The bedrooms are spacious, with those plush queen beds that actually let you sink in after a day exploring (honestly, the pillows were a highlight – firm but not rock-hard, you know?). There’s a full kitchen stocked with basics – think a decent coffee machine and even some local tea bags – which saved me from eating out every meal. I whipped up brekkie one morning while overlooking the little balcony, catching glimpses of the neighborhood trees swaying. It’s super close to Mount Alexander Road, so you’re a short walk from cafes like the ones in Moonee Ponds, where you can grab a flat white and people-watch the locals heading to work. Parking’s easy too – street spots are plentiful, though it gets tighter on race days at nearby Moonee Valley Racecourse (pro tip: avoid weekends if you’re driving). Oh, and the Wi-Fi was solid, no buffering during my Netflix binge – but fair warning, the bathroom’s on the smaller side, sort of cozy for two people sharing, but the hot water never ran out, even in winter.
All in all, if you’re flying into Melbourne and need a spot that’s not in the chaotic CBD but still connected – trams on Pascoe Vale Road can zip you downtown in under 30 minutes – this place is a winner. It’s got that 9.3 rating for a reason; families or couples would love it for a few nights, especially in shoulder seasons like spring when Essendon’s parks are blooming and the crowds are thin. I left feeling like I’d found a little secret in the ‘burbs – not perfect, but authentically comfortable, and way better value than those overpriced airport hotels. Book it if you’re after that blend of quiet and convenience; you won’t regret it.
