Hotel Description

I pulled up to 151 City Road in Southbank after a quick drive from the airport – honestly, if you’re flying into Tullamarine, it’s a straight shot down the Tullamarine Freeway, maybe 25 minutes without traffic, which is a godsend compared to the usual Melbourne gridlock. The building’s one of those sleek high-rises that popped up in the last decade, you know, right where the Yarra River bends and the city starts to feel alive. Check-in was a breeze; it’s not your typical hotel lobby fuss – they email you a code for the secure entry, and boom, you’re in. I mean, I arrived a bit early after wandering around the South Wharf promenade (grab a flat white at one of those riverside cafes if you get the chance – the coffee’s legit, with that nutty aroma wafting from the beans they roast on-site), and there was no drama waiting for the place to be ready. Stepping into the apartment, it hit me: this isn’t some cramped room; it’s a proper two-bedroom setup, modern as heck with those floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Melbourne skyline. The free parking spot in the basement? Total lifesaver – parking in Southbank can be a nightmare, especially on weekends when everyone’s heading to Crown Casino or the arts centre over on St Kilda Road.

What really sold me was how it feels like a home base in the thick of things, without the stuffiness of a big chain hotel. The living area opens up to a balcony where you can sip your morning brew and watch the trams clanging along Clarendon Street below – it’s got that urban hum, sort of energizing, though if you’re a light sleeper, the faint traffic buzz from City Road might nudge you awake around rush hour (earplugs helped me, no biggie). The kitchen’s fully kitted out – stainless steel appliances, even a dishwasher that doesn’t rattle like some older spots I’ve stayed in – and I whipped up a quick brekkie using stuff from the Queen Victoria Market, which is just a 15-minute walk across the river via the pedestrian bridge. Bedrooms are comfy, with plush queen beds that actually feel supportive after a day trekking to Federation Square or catching a show at the Malthouse Theatre nearby. And those city views? At dusk, when the Eureka Tower lights up and the skyline twinkles, it’s magical – well, except on foggy winter mornings when the mist rolls in off the Yarra, but that’s Melbourne for you, unpredictable and charming in its own way. The place is spotless, too, with that fresh linen scent lingering, and the Wi-Fi’s speedy enough for streaming without the frustrating lags you get in some budget joints.

Look, if you’re traveling with a partner or a small family and want to skip the hotel shuffle, this 4-star apartment rates an 8.4 for good reason – it’s practical, with that free parking easing the pain of Melbourne’s pricey lots, and you’re steps from the free tram zone that loops into the CBD. Sure, it’s not dead quiet like the suburbs, and the building’s elevators can get busy during peak tourist seasons (think summer festivals or the Australian Open in January), but honestly, for the views and the space, I’d book it again in a heartbeat. It’s the kind of spot that lets you dip into the city’s vibe – riverside walks, hidden laneway eats on Flinders Lane – without feeling like a tourist trap. If you’re after an authentic slice of Southbank life, this one’s a winner.

Reviews

  • The apartment was nice only had that minor problem – Bron from Australia – 2 June 2025 (9/10)

The property was central for all the activities that we did.

What could be improved: We had a problem finding the parking garage as the photo sent was with the door open maybe just saying where it’s actually situated in the lane. Also as we left the keys in the apartment (as they were the instructions)we could go to the where our car was parked we could only go to the ground floor then asked if someone could use there key so we could get to floor 7. Then we got to the roller door we couldn’t actually leave as you need the keys to get out so we had to wait for another car to get the roller door up. Luckily someone was behind us as I’m not sure how long we would have been there.

  • Not a great experience and we would not wish to stay again. – Ian from Australia – 18 March 2025 (7/10)

    It was comfortable.

What could be improved: Check in was inflexible (after 3pm) and there was no reception and on-site bag storage. We had to pay for offsite bag storage and collect the keys at a convenience store that was far from convenient and which wasted valuable time. We didn’t realise this was an Airbnb apartment and this should have been made clear.
There were no wine glasses and no coffee pods for the coffee machine.
The clothes dryer was left on when we arrived and was full of sheets, towels etc which we had to take out, fold and put away!
It was expensive and not very good.

  • Reasonable but could be more – Stella from Australia – 7 March 2024 (8/10)

Good location. Good supply of toiletries available.

What could be improved: Process to pick up the keys is confusing especially around that pocket of the city. Also need more than one key to get in for group accommodation. No air conditioning in bedrooms, which gets very hot.

  • Very good – Martono from Australia – 21 July 2024 (8/10)

  • Very good – Lada from Australia – 9 January 2024 (8/10)

  • Exceptional – John from Australia – 7 March 2025 (10/10)
