Adina Apartment Hotel Melbourne, Pentridge Overview
You know, pulling up to the Adina Apartment Hotel Melbourne, Pentridge for the first time, I couldn’t shake this weird mix of history and modern vibes – it’s literally built into the old Pentridge Prison site, which, if you’re into Melbourne’s gritty past, is kind of fascinating. I mean, we’re talking about a place where notorious crims did time back in the day, but now it’s all sleek apartments and green spaces. I arrived mid-afternoon on a weekday, and check-in was a breeze – the staff were chatty locals who tipped me off about the best coffee spots on nearby Sydney Road in Coburg, like that little joint called Padre that’s always buzzing with cyclists grabbing flat whites. Parking? Honestly, it’s a godsend here; they have secure underground spots, which is rare in this part of town where street parking can be a nightmare, especially on weekends when the markets pop up. The lobby smells faintly of fresh eucalyptus – probably from those diffusers they use – and it’s got this open, airy feel with exposed bluestone walls nodding to the prison heritage without feeling creepy. I remember thinking, well, this beats the soulless high-rises in the CBD; it’s like staying in a piece of living history, just a quick tram ride down Bell Street to the city if you need it.
What really sold me on the place, though, was the apartment setup – these aren’t your standard hotel rooms, they’re proper self-contained pads with full kitchens, washers, and even balconies overlooking the courtyard (mine had a view of the old watchtower, which was oddly cool at sunset). I stayed in a one-bedroom during a rainy Melbourne spring, and let me tell you, cooking up some pasta with ingredients from the Coburg Farmers’ Market – it’s just a short walk away on Saturdays – felt like being at home, not on the road. The beds are plush, with those crisp white linens that actually stay cool, and the bathroom had decent water pressure, though the shower gel smelled a bit too floral for my taste, like overripe jasmine or something. There’s a gym and pool on-site, nothing flashy but functional – I squeezed in a swim one quiet morning when the place was dead, no crowds like you’d get at busier spots in South Yarra. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly peaceful for being so close to the action; you might hear faint tram rattles from Sydney Road at night, but it’s not intrusive. Oh, and pro tip: if you’re here in summer, book a room on the higher floors to catch the breeze – the lower ones can feel a tad stuffy without AC cranked.
All in all, if you’re visiting Melbourne and want something beyond the tourist traps, this Adina spot in Pentridge is a smart pick – especially for families or longer stays, since you can spread out and skip eating out every meal. It’s got that 4.5-star polish with a 9/10 rating that feels earned, not hyped. Sure, the on-site cafe could use more vegan options (I ended up trekking to Brunswick for brekkie a couple times), but that’s a minor gripe in an otherwise solid setup. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better blend of history, comfort, and that authentic northside Melbourne feel – think craft breweries along Merri Creek trails, just a stone’s throw away. I’d go back in a heartbeat, rainy season or not.

Great room, quite spacious, clean and stylish. Love how the hotel chain kept the original building facade of Pentridge Prison. In the hotel room is a beautiful historical book full of the prison's history and an enormous election of photos inside, outside and around the prison grounds, fascinating. Great bathroom and bed fairly comfy. The bedhead is designed like a printed fabric version of a prison fence, the room design has been cleverly created.
