Apartments on Chapman
I remember pulling up to Apartments on Chapman on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, one of those days where the trams are rattling down Flemington Road and the air smells like wet eucalyptus mixed with coffee from the corner cafes.
I remember pulling up to Apartments on Chapman on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, one of those days where the trams are rattling down Flemington Road and the air smells like wet eucalyptus mixed with coffee from the corner cafes. It’s tucked away on Chapman Street in North Melbourne, just a stone’s throw from the buzz of Errol Street with its little indie shops and that great bakery, Milk the Cow, if you’re into cheese platters after dark. Honestly, I was skeptical at first because North Melbourne can feel a bit gritty around the edges – think old Victorian terraces and the occasional whiff of exhaust from the nearby hospital traffic – but this place surprised me. Check-in was a breeze; no stuffy front desk, just a friendly local bloke who handed over the keys and chatted about the best route to avoid the peak-hour snarl on Arden Street. And parking? Well, it’s on-street mostly, so get there early if you’re driving – I lucked out with a spot right out front, but I’ve heard tales of circling the block during footy season when the crowds hit Marvel Stadium nearby.
What really won me over were the apartments themselves – spacious, modern setups that feel more like a mate’s flat than a generic hotel room. Mine had this huge kitchen with actual decent cookware (not those flimsy pans you get in some places), and the balcony overlooked a quiet courtyard where you could hear birds chirping in the morning, sort of drowning out the distant hum of the city. The beds are comfy, with that crisp linen smell, and there’s free Wi-Fi that actually works without dropping every five minutes – crucial if you’re like me and need to hop on a Zoom call. I mean, it’s rated 8.1 for a reason; it’s not flashy, but it’s practical for longer stays. We wandered over to Queen Victoria Market, just a 15-minute stroll away, for fresh produce and those killer doughnuts – pro tip, go on a Wednesday night when it’s less touristy and more about the locals grabbing dinner. Noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful after 10 PM, though you might catch the faint echo of a tram bell if your window’s open. Oh, and the laundry facilities? A lifesaver after a muddy hike in the Dandenongs – but fair warning, the machines can be a tad finicky, so pack some patience.
All in all, if you’re after a no-fuss base to explore Melbourne without the CBD chaos, Apartments on Chapman is a solid pick. It’s got that authentic North Melbs vibe – close enough to hop on the 57 tram into the city (five minutes to Flagstaff Gardens), but far enough to unwind without the constant foot traffic. Sure, it’s not perfect; the decor’s a bit minimalist for my taste, and if you’re sensitive to light, those street lamps can sneak through the blinds. But honestly, for a 4-star spot at that price, you’d be hard-pressed to find better value. I left feeling like I’d discovered a hidden gem – next time I’m in town for the Grand Prix or just a weekend escape, this is where I’d crash again.
Locals suggest to book apartments in Melbourne around Carlton for Italian cafés, indie cinemas, and leafy park picnics.
