Auburn & Ivy – Scandi Charm off Burwood Road
You know, I stumbled upon Auburn & Ivy while hunting for a spot in Melbourne's inner east that didn't feel like just another cookie-cutter hotel – and honestly, it hit the spot in ways I didn't expect.
You know, I stumbled upon Auburn & Ivy while hunting for a spot in Melbourne’s inner east that didn’t feel like just another cookie-cutter hotel – and honestly, it hit the spot in ways I didn’t expect. Tucked off Burwood Road in Hawthorn (postcode 3122, for those mapping it out), it’s right where Auburn Road meets the quieter residential bits, so you’re not smack in the CBD chaos but close enough to hop on the 16 tram down Glenferrie Road and be in the city in 20 minutes. I mean, if you’re like me and love that suburban vibe with easy access – think leafy streets lined with those old Victorian terraces – this place nails it. Pulling up, the facade has this understated Scandi charm: clean white lines, blonde wood accents, and these big windows that let in that soft Melbourne light, especially on those crisp autumn mornings when the eucalypts are rustling outside. Check-in was a breeze – the staff (mostly locals, from what I could tell) were chatty without being over-the-top, and they even tipped me off about the best coffee at the little joint on Power Street, just a five-minute stroll away. Oh, and parking? There’s a small lot out back, but it fills up quick during uni semester at nearby Swinburne, so get in early if you’re driving.
What really sold me, though, was how the Scandi theme carries through inside – it’s not gimmicky, more like a cozy nod to hygge without trying too hard. My room (a standard double, nothing fancy) had these plush wool throws on the bed that felt like wrapping up in a cloud, and the bathroom smelled faintly of that fresh pine soap they stock – reminded me of wandering through the Dandenongs on a rainy day. The mini-fridge was stocked with local goodies, like those craft beers from a brewery in nearby Richmond, and there’s a communal lounge downstairs with these oversized armchairs where I spent an evening nursing a flat white, eavesdropping on locals debating footy scores. It’s rated an 8 for a reason – solid four-star comfort, with free Wi-Fi that actually holds up for streaming, and breakfast (included in some rates) that’s more than just toast; think fresh avo on rye with poached eggs that don’t taste like they’ve been sitting out. That said, it’s not perfect – Burwood Road can get a bit noisy with morning traffic if your room faces that way (ask for one at the back if you’re a light sleeper), and the gym is pretty basic, more for a quick treadmill session than anything serious. But well, for the price, it’s a steal compared to the pricier spots in South Yarra.
All in all, if you’re visiting Melbourne and want something authentic – not the tourist traps downtown, but a real slice of east-side life – Auburn & Ivy is worth it. I’ve stayed in fancier places, sure, but this one left me feeling like I’d found a hidden gem, especially in spring when the ivy on the walls turns that vibrant green and the nearby Camberwell Market is buzzing on Sundays. You’d care if you’re traveling solo or with a partner, maybe avoiding peak summer crowds (it gets busier then with families heading to the Yarra trails). Honestly, I’d go back just for that sense of calm amid the city’s hum – it’s the kind of spot that makes you linger a bit longer.
Melbourne hotels keep food lovers close to Queen Victoria Market, hidden cocktail dens, and rooftop beer gardens.

What Our Guests Say
Very good 装饰的很温馨现代,住起来很舒服,小露台氛围感十足,夏天喝个啤酒会很惬意
What could be improved: 只有客厅一个小空调,冬天下雨晚上睡觉有点冷。厨房工具很全,但是没有洗碗机,自己手洗的碗,怕下一位住客觉得不干净。这个民宿是没有电梯的哦,要爬三楼,行李多的重的要小心
