Award winning designer complex – Cantala
I remember pulling up to Cantala on Wilks Street after a quick drive from the city center – you know, that stretch along Dandenong Road where the traffic eases up once you hit Caulfield North.
I remember pulling up to Cantala on Wilks Street after a quick drive from the city center – you know, that stretch along Dandenong Road where the traffic eases up once you hit Caulfield North. It’s tucked into this leafy suburb, not your flashy downtown spot, but honestly, that’s part of the charm if you’re after something a bit more low-key than the CBD hustle. I arrived mid-afternoon during spring racing season, and yeah, the Caulfield Racecourse is just a stone’s throw away – like, a 10-minute walk if you’re keen on catching the Cup vibe without the chaos. Parking was a breeze; they’ve got secure spots right out front, which is a godsend in Melbourne where street parking can be a nightmare, especially on race days when everything fills up. Check-in was smooth – the staff were chatty locals who tipped me off about the best coffee on Glen Huntly Road (try the flat white at that little joint near the tram stop; it’s better than anything in the city, I swear). The lobby has this sleek, designer feel – all clean lines and that subtle eucalyptus scent from the fresh arrangements – but it’s not pretentious, you know? More like a welcoming apartment complex that’s won some awards for its eco-friendly build, which actually shows in the recycled timber accents everywhere.
What really sold me on Cantala, though – and I’ve stayed in a few 4-star spots around Melbourne – is how it blends that modern edge with practical comforts that make you feel at home. My room was one of those spacious suites with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the quiet street; the bed was plush, like sinking into a cloud after a long day exploring, and the rainfall shower? Total bliss, though I will say the bathroom felt a tad compact if you’re traveling with a partner and both need space in the morning rush. It’s got all the little touches travelers appreciate: super-fast Wi-Fi that didn’t drop once (crucial for remote work calls), a kitchenette with actual decent appliances – not those flimsy hotel ones – and even a balcony where I sipped my morning tea listening to the birds in the nearby parks. Well, sort of; there was a bit of distant train noise from the Frankston line, but it fades into white noise after dark, and the place is dead quiet otherwise, especially off-peak when the suburb winds down early. The complex has a small gym and pool area that’s heated year-round – perfect for Melbourne’s unpredictable weather – and they do these complimentary yoga sessions on weekends, which I joined once and felt surprisingly zen afterward.
Look, if you’re visiting Melbourne and want to skip the tourist traps while still being connected – the tram to the city takes about 20 minutes, or you can hop on at Caulfield station for a direct train – Cantala’s a smart pick. It’s rated a solid 9.3 for a reason; great value for families or solo travelers who appreciate design without the sky-high prices of South Yarra spots. I mean, I left feeling like I’d discovered a hidden gem in the suburbs, and I’d book again in a heartbeat – especially in autumn when the leaves turn and the area’s parks are at their best. Just pack light if stairs are an issue; not all units have elevators, but the staff are quick to help with bags.
Hotel in Melbourne bookings surge before Australian Open matches, so fans secure courtside stays months in advance.

What Our Guests Say
We liked how clean, roomy and comfortable it was. The kitchen was well equipped and the lounge area was very comfy to relax and enjoy watching a show. The beds were great and the bathroom very special; it even had a heated toilet seat! 😅
We were probably most impressed that the owner allowed us (& trusted us) to bring our well-trained Golden Retriever - she was the reason for our visit to Melbourne (from Adelaide) in fact, as she needed to have specialist eye and heart checks.
We loved the location, which was a quiet neighbourhood with lovely houses, 8 minutes walk to coffee shops and Woolworths Metro. The carpark in the basement was handy.
Was in a lovely quiet spot. Comfortable and clean.
Our host, Apple, was pleasant and responsive. Detail instructions given for keys collection. The apartment was clean and cosy with indoor parking and stable wifi. Quiet environment mostly with occasional morning call of the wild(birds) :) Well-stocked kitchen pantry of sauces for home cooking!
Easy to collect keys and access, great as there was a dedicated car spot which was important for us. Close to shops.
Nice and modern, beautiful decor. It was quiet and very private. Nice balcony with some greenery. We love how it is tucked away and very peaceful. Great for small family. Enjoyed it thoroughly.
It is very quite at night, sleep well.
