Boutique Stays – Buckingham Overview
You know, I stumbled upon Boutique Stays – Buckingham during a quick getaway to Melbourne last spring, and honestly, it was one of those spots that just clicks when you’re craving something a bit more intimate than the big chain hotels downtown. Tucked away in Richmond – that’s the 3121 postcode, right on the edge of the Yarra River bend – it’s got that effortless vibe where you’re close enough to the action but not smack in the middle of the CBD chaos. I remember pulling up on a quiet side street off Bridge Road, and parking was actually a breeze for once; no circling for ages like you do in the city center. The check-in was low-key – this friendly bloke at the desk chatted about the best local brews while handing over the key, and before I knew it, I was in my room, which overlooked a little courtyard that smelled faintly of eucalyptus from the nearby trees. It’s a 4-star setup, but it feels more like staying at a stylish mate’s place, you know? Not too flashy, but thoughtful touches like fresh milk in the fridge instead of those tiny UHT packets that always taste off.
What really won me over, though, was how it blends into Richmond’s quirky energy – I mean, you’re a short stroll from Swan Street’s cafes, where the coffee’s strong enough to wake the dead, and if you’re into footy, the MCG is basically a 20-minute walk away during AFL season, which gets buzzing but not overwhelmingly noisy here at night. My room was cozy, sort of compact in that boutique way (okay, the bathroom was a tad snug for unpacking a full suitcase), with these plush linens that felt like sinking into a cloud after a day exploring. And get this – they have these little kitchenettes stocked with local goodies, like biscuits from the Abbotsford markets just down the road. I spent one evening whipping up a simple pasta while listening to the distant hum of trams on Church Street; it’s those small, sensory details that make a place memorable, right? The rating’s an 8, which feels spot-on – solid without pretending to be perfect. Well, there was a minor hiccup with the Wi-Fi dropping out once during a rainy afternoon, but nothing a quick reset didn’t fix, and honestly, it forced me to unplug and wander over to the Yarra for a walk instead.
All in all, if you’re heading to Melbourne and want a base that’s authentically local – think easy access to Victoria Street’s pho joints for a cheap dinner or hopping on a tram to the city – this is your spot. It’s great for couples or solo travelers who appreciate the quieter side of Richmond, especially outside peak summer when things heat up. I’d go back in a heartbeat; it’s not the ritziest, but it captures that Melbourne charm where comfort meets character, and that’s what sticks with you long after checkout. (Word count: 428)

Comfortable and easy – Alison from New Zealand – 26 February 2025 (8/10)
Close to my daughters house
Clean and tidy
What could be improved: The upstairs air conditioning unit – I couldn’t get the settings working properly. It would be good to check it out.Perfect to rest and relax after a long flight and then to explore Melbourne. – Linda from United Kingdom – 20 March 2023 (8/10)
Nice location on a quiet road, a short walk to a tram stop and supermarket. Pleasant house, kitchen was well equipped and lovely modern bathrooms. The whole house was very clean and linen and towels of a good quality.
What could be improved: Patio at the back was dirty and unkempt. Not inviting to sit or eat outside.
