I remember pulling up to Boutique Stays – Highviews in West Melbourne after a long drive from the airport – you know, that stretch along the Tullamarine Freeway that always feels endless when you’re jet-lagged. It’s tucked away on a quiet side street off Spencer Street, which is handy because you’re just a stone’s throw from the Docklands and that massive Marvel Stadium (formerly Etihad, if you’re old-school like me). Honestly, finding parking was a bit of a hassle – street spots are metered and fill up fast during footy season, but they have a small secure lot out back that saved my sanity. Walking in, the lobby hit me with this cozy vibe, all exposed brick walls and that faint, welcoming scent of fresh eucalyptus from the diffusers they use – it’s like Melbourne’s trying to remind you it’s not all concrete and trams. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – mostly locals with that laid-back Aussie charm – chatted about the best coffee spots nearby, like this little hole-in-the-wall on Adderley Street where the flat whites are killer.
What really sets this place apart, though, is the “highviews” part – I mean, the name doesn’t lie. My room on the upper floor overlooked the city skyline, with the Yarra River glinting in the distance and even a peek at the Bolte Bridge lights at night. It’s a boutique setup, so no cookie-cutter vibes here; the rooms are spacious with these plush, king-sized beds that feel like sinking into a cloud after a day wandering the Queen Victoria Market (which is literally a 10-minute walk away – pro tip: go early on weekends to beat the crowds for those fresh doughnuts). There’s a kitchenette in each suite, stocked with basics like decent tea and a Nespresso machine – saved me from overpriced room service, though I did splurge on their breakfast basket once, all local jams and pastries that tasted homemade. Well, sort of – the croissants were a tad flaky, but hey, that’s better than stale hotel buffet stuff. Noise-wise, it’s pretty quiet for being so close to the CBD; you might hear the occasional tram rumble from King Street, especially in the evenings, but the double-glazed windows keep it muffled. And if you’re into that urban buzz, step out onto the balcony – the evening air carries hints of street food from the nearby laneways, like grilled souvlaki from the Greek spots in North Melbourne.
Look, if you’re visiting Melbourne and want something that feels more like a stylish apartment than a sterile hotel chain, Boutique Stays – Highviews is a gem. It’s got that 4-star polish with a 9.2 rating that actually holds up – I’ve stayed in pricier spots downtown that didn’t deliver half as much character. Sure, it’s not the cheapest option, especially in peak summer when the city’s packed with tourists hitting the Australian Open, but for the views, the easy access to trams that zip you to Federation Square in under 15 minutes, and those little touches like complimentary bikes for exploring Flagstaff Gardens, it’s worth it. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a local secret – you know what, next time I’m in town, I’m booking it again, no question. (Just pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper during those rare construction bursts on nearby roads.)
Hotel in Melbourne bookings surge before Australian Open matches, so fans secure courtside stays months in advance.

What Our Guests Say
views and privacy
