Boutique Stays – Lalique
I remember pulling up to Boutique Stays - Lalique on Docker Street in Elwood, and honestly, it felt like stumbling into one of those hidden gems that only locals really talk about.
I remember pulling up to Boutique Stays – Lalique on Docker Street in Elwood, and honestly, it felt like stumbling into one of those hidden gems that only locals really talk about. Elwood’s this chill beachside suburb, you know, tucked away from the tourist frenzy of St Kilda but close enough that you can wander over for gelato on Acland Street if the mood strikes. The place is at 5/30 Docker Street – it’s actually a converted apartment setup, sort of boutique and intimate, with that modern edge but without trying too hard. Check-in was a breeze; no stuffy front desk, just a quick code entry and a welcome pack waiting inside. I arrived in the late afternoon during summer, and the air had that salty tang from nearby Elwood Beach – you can smell the ocean before you even see it. Parking? Well, it’s street parking mostly, which can be a bit of a hunt on weekends when everyone’s out for picnics at the foreshore, but I snagged a spot right out front without much drama.
What really won me over was how lived-in and thoughtful the space felt – like someone’s stylish Melbourne flat, not some cookie-cutter hotel room. The apartment I stayed in had these high ceilings and big windows letting in that golden afternoon light, with decor that’s all clean lines and a nod to local art (I spotted a print from a Fitzroy gallery, which was a nice touch). The bed was comfy as anything, those crisp white linens that actually feel fresh, not starchy, and there’s a little kitchenette stocked with basics – think decent coffee pods and even some fresh milk in the fridge, which saved me a groggy morning run to the IGA on Ormond Road. It’s rated about 7.7, and yeah, that tracks; it’s solid four-star stuff, but nothing over-the-top luxurious. Noise-wise, Docker Street’s pretty quiet at night – you might hear the distant hum of the light rail on St Kilda Road if you’re a light sleeper, but it didn’t bother me. I mean, I spent one evening just chilling on the balcony with a glass of local Yarra Valley wine, watching the neighborhood wind down. And get this – it’s a short stroll to Elwood Canal for a jog or to grab brunch at Combi, that organic spot locals swear by. During quieter months like autumn, it’s even better; fewer crowds, and the beach paths are all yours.
All in all, if you’re after a spot that feels authentically Melbourne without the CBD chaos, Lalique’s worth it – especially for couples or solo travelers who want that home-away-from-home vibe. It’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times during my stay, and if you’re driving, factor in that parking shuffle. But honestly, waking up to the sound of seagulls and being able to hit the beach in under 10 minutes? That’s the kind of simple magic that makes you book again. I’d say go for it if you’re visiting in spring – the jacarandas are blooming everywhere, and Elwood just glows.
To book hotel in Melbourne for laneway art tours, travelers grab rooms early to pair coffee crawls with gallery nights in Fitzroy.
