Boutique Stays – Wellington Mews

I remember pulling up to Boutique Stays – Wellington Mews on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, one of those days where the city’s famous four-seasons-in-one-day weather is in full swing. It’s tucked away on Wellington Crescent in East Melbourne, right at 25/1, and honestly, finding it felt like stumbling onto a hidden gem in a neighborhood that’s all leafy streets and Victorian terraces. East Melbourne isn’t the flashy part of town like the CBD or South Yarra, but that’s what I loved about it – it’s got that quiet, residential charm, with Fitzroy Gardens just a five-minute stroll away. I mean, if you’re into morning jogs or picnics, you can wander straight into those massive gardens without dealing with tourist crowds. Parking was a bit of a squeeze, though; street spots are limited, especially during footy season when everyone’s heading to the MCG, which is basically around the corner. But once I got inside, the check-in was a breeze – no stuffy front desk, just a friendly host who handed over the keys and pointed out the fresh bread and coffee setup in the kitchenette. It felt more like crashing at a mate’s stylish pad than a hotel.
What really sets this place apart, I think, is how it blends that boutique vibe with actual livability – it’s a 4-star spot with a solid 9.3 rating for a reason. The rooms (well, more like self-contained apartments) have these high ceilings and polished floorboards that creak just enough to remind you you’re in an old converted mews building, but in a cozy way, not annoying. I stayed in one with a little balcony overlooking the crescent, and mornings started with the smell of eucalyptus from the nearby trees wafting in, mixed with the distant hum of trams on Wellington Parade. You know what surprised me? The bedding – super soft Egyptian cotton sheets that made it hard to get up, and the bathroom had those rain showerheads that actually deliver on pressure, not like some places where it’s a dribble. It’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi dipped a tad in the evenings when the area’s busy, but nothing a quick reset couldn’t fix. And if you’re cooking – which I did one night with goodies from the Queen Vic Market, just a short tram ride away – the kitchen’s got everything from a proper oven to sharp knives. Oh, and noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful after dark, though you might hear the occasional possum scampering on the roof if you’re on the top floor. Little details like that make it feel authentic to Melbourne’s inner suburbs.
All in all, if you’re visiting Melbourne and want something beyond the generic chain hotels, I’d say book Wellington Mews – especially in spring when the gardens are blooming or during the Aussie Open, since it’s so close to Rod Laver Arena without the insane prices. It’s not the cheapest option, but for the space and that homey feel, it’s worth it. Honestly, I left wishing I had more time to explore the local cafes on Bridge Road – there’s this one spot with killer flat whites that locals swear by. Just pack light if stairs are an issue; no elevator in these older buildings. You won’t regret it, though – it’s the kind of stay that makes you feel like you’ve got the real Melbourne experience.
Exploring Melbourne blends laneway espresso haunts, Victorian arcades, and seaside boardwalks alive with street performers.
