Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Camberwell Serviced Apartments last time I was in Melbourne – well, “stumbled” might be a stretch, since I’d been eyeing a spot in the eastern suburbs to avoid the CBD chaos. It’s right on Camberwell Road, number 85, in that leafy part of 3124 where the houses have those big verandas and the trees actually change color in autumn. Driving in from the airport, I took the Tullamarine Freeway and hopped off at the Toorak Road exit – easy enough, though honestly, if you’re coming during rush hour, that stretch can get a bit snarled with locals commuting to the city. But once you’re there, parking’s a breeze; they’ve got secure spots underground, which is a godsend in a suburb where street parking turns into a hunt after 5 PM.
What really sold me on the place – aside from the 4.5-star vibe that doesn’t feel overblown – is how it’s set up like proper serviced apartments, not some sterile hotel room. I stayed in a one-bedroom unit, and it had this cozy kitchenette with a full fridge (stocked it with goodies from the Camberwell Market on Sundays – fresh bread and cheeses, you can’t beat it). The bed was plush, like sinking into a cloud after a day wandering Burke Road’s boutiques – oh, and speaking of, you’re just a short walk from there, with cafes like Laurent Bakery where the croissants smell like heaven first thing in the morning. It’s quiet, too; Camberwell’s not the party hub, so evenings are peaceful, maybe the faint hum of trams on Riversdale Road if you listen hard (tram 72 gets you to the city in 20 minutes, by the way). I mean, there was a minor thing – the Wi-Fi dipped a bit during peak Netflix hours, but nothing a quick reset couldn’t fix. And the check-in? Self-service with a code, super straightforward, though if you’re arriving late, double-check the instructions because the front desk isn’t 24/7.
All in all, if you’re traveling solo or with a small family and want that home-away-from-home feel without skimping on quality – it’s rated 8.7 for a reason – this is your spot. I’ve stayed in fancier joints downtown, but they don’t give you the suburban ease of popping over to Frog Hollow Reserve for a jog or grabbing a flat white without fighting tourist crowds. Sort of reminds me why I love Melbourne’s edges; it’s authentic, practical, and leaves you refreshed. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the jacarandas are blooming along the streets – just book ahead for weekends, as it fills up with locals escaping the inner-city buzz.
