The Experience

Carlton meets Fitzroy at this Leafy Urban Hideaway

You know, I stumbled upon this place while wandering through Carlton one afternoon, and honestly, it felt like the perfect spot where the laid-back Italian vibes of Lygon Street bleed right into Fitzroy's artsy edge – that's exactly what the name hints at, "Carlton meets Fitzroy at this Leafy Urban Hideaway." Tucked away on a quiet stretch near Rathdowne Street, it's got that leafy canopy overhead from all those massive plane trees that line the sidewalks, making you forget you're just a stone's throw from the bustle of Melbourne's inner north.

You know, I stumbled upon this place while wandering through Carlton one afternoon, and honestly, it felt like the perfect spot where the laid-back Italian vibes of Lygon Street bleed right into Fitzroy’s artsy edge – that’s exactly what the name hints at, “Carlton meets Fitzroy at this Leafy Urban Hideaway.” Tucked away on a quiet stretch near Rathdowne Street, it’s got that leafy canopy overhead from all those massive plane trees that line the sidewalks, making you forget you’re just a stone’s throw from the bustle of Melbourne’s inner north. I mean, the address is smack in Carlton, postcode 3053, but you’re basically on the doorstep of Fitzroy – hop over Brunswick Street and you’re in cafe heaven. First time I pulled up, I was a bit worried about parking; it’s Melbourne, after all, and those narrow streets get crammed with uni students’ beat-up cars during term time. But they sorted me out with a spot in their little undercover area – nothing fancy, but it saved me circling for ages like I usually do around here.

What really won me over, though, was how this 4-star hideaway nails that urban retreat feel without trying too hard. The rooms are cozy – sort of compact, if I’m being honest, which might feel snug if you’re traveling with a ton of luggage, but the high ceilings and those big windows overlooking the green bits make it airy. I remember waking up to the smell of fresh coffee wafting up from the ground-floor cafe (they do a mean flat white, by the way, with beans from some local roaster in Collingwood). And the textures – soft linen sheets, a plush armchair by the window where I sat reading with the distant hum of trams rattling along Nicholson Street in the background. It’s not dead silent at night, especially on weekends when the pubs on Lygon spill out with laughter, but earplugs sorted that out for me. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were these friendly locals who chatted about hidden gems like the nearby Carlton Gardens – perfect for a morning jog or just escaping the summer heat under the elms. Oh, and if you’re into food, you’re golden – I walked two minutes to that little gelato spot on Faraday Street, or grabbed dumplings from one of the hole-in-the-wall places that pop up around Melbourne Uni. Rating-wise, it’s sitting at a solid 8.2, which feels about right; nothing over-the-top luxurious, but thoughtful touches like the complimentary herbal teas in the lobby make it stand out.

All in all, if you’re after a spot that lets you dip into Melbourne’s vibrant scene without the chaos – think quiet evenings after exploring the street art in Fitzroy or catching a film at the Nova Cinema – this is it. Well, maybe skip peak footy season when the area’s buzzing with AFL crowds, but otherwise, it’s a gem for couples or solo travelers who want that leafy escape. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the jacarandas are blooming and the whole neighborhood smells like jasmine. Just book ahead; it fills up quick with the uni crowd and weekenders from interstate.

Melbourne hotels keep food lovers close to Queen Victoria Market, hidden cocktail dens, and rooftop beer gardens.

Stayed for a week as part of work travel. A nice space to come home to after a day's work. A nice, quiet area. The apartment was relatively clean and well stocked with little things to make your stay comfortable.

What could be improved: Nothing stands out as a major issue.

Very happy with choice, even more so when some clothes I left behind were mailed back to me. Impressive! Clean and tidy, everything you would want, very comfortable bed, surprisingly quiet given quite a built up area.

What could be improved: About 10-12 minute walk to Lygon Street
