Central Sky High Living on Little Collins
I remember stepping out of the Uber onto Little Collins Street – you know, that narrow, vibey lane right in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, sandwiched between the grand old buildings on Collins and the laneway cafes of Flinders Lane – and thinking, wow, this place is smack in the middle of everything without feeling overwhelming.
I remember stepping out of the Uber onto Little Collins Street – you know, that narrow, vibey lane right in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, sandwiched between the grand old buildings on Collins and the laneway cafes of Flinders Lane – and thinking, wow, this place is smack in the middle of everything without feeling overwhelming. Central Sky High Living on Little Collins isn’t your typical hotel; it’s more like a sleek apartment tower that lets you live like a local, high up above the tram bells and coffee roasters below. I arrived mid-afternoon during peak hour – honestly, if you’re driving, forget about easy parking; the street’s a one-way maze, and you’d be better off ditching the car at one of those undercover lots on Russell Street (they’re pricey, but worth it to avoid the hassle). Check-in was a breeze, though – the lobby’s got this modern, minimalist vibe with fresh eucalyptus scents wafting from somewhere (Melbourne’s all about that native flora touch), and the staff were chatty locals who tipped me off on avoiding the tourist traps around Federation Square. My room – well, suite, really – was on the 15th floor, and opening those floor-to-ceiling windows to that panoramic view of the Yarra River snaking through the city? It hit different, especially at dusk when the skyline lights up like a postcard.
What really sets this spot apart, I think, is how it balances that sky-high luxury with practical, everyday comforts – it’s a 4-star setup with a solid 9 rating for a reason, but it’s not pretentious about it. The rooms are spacious, sort of like a studio apartment with a full kitchenette (stock up on fresh produce from Queen Victoria Market, just a 10-minute walk north – pro tip: go early mornings for the best doughnuts and avoid the weekend crowds). I loved the plush bedding and rain shower – after a day dodging rain showers (Melbourne weather, am I right? Pack layers, even in summer), it was a godsend. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly quiet up there; you might hear faint tram dings from below, but nothing that keeps you up – unless you’re a light sleeper during the Aussie Open in January, when the city’s buzzing nonstop. Oh, and the Wi-Fi’s speedy, which saved me when I needed to book last-minute tickets to the MCG (it’s an easy tram ride away on Swanston). That said, the gym’s basic – treadmill and weights, no fancy classes – and breakfast isn’t included, but with cafes like Hardware Lane’s hidden gems steps away, who needs it? I mean, grabbing a flat white and avo toast at a spot like Pellegrini’s (a Melbourne institution) beats any hotel buffet.
All in all, if you’re after that authentic Melbourne immersion without skimping on comfort, this place nails it – especially for couples or solo travelers who want to feel like they’ve got a pied-à-terre in the city. It’s not perfect; elevators can get crowded during check-out rushes, and the views might not wow if you’re on a lower floor facing the alley (ask for south-facing if you can). But honestly, waking up to that urban hum, strolling to Bourke Street for shopping or hopping on a tram to St Kilda Beach – it made my trip feel less like tourism and more like living the dream. I’d go back in a heartbeat, maybe in spring when the jacarandas are blooming. If Melbourne’s on your list, book here – you won’t regret it.
Hotels near me in Melbourne deliver effortless tram hops to theatres, sports arenas, and Southbank cultural hubs.

We loved the view and the location of the property. It was a cute apartment with all the bells and whistles you could ask for. It was clean and had a great feel to it
Location is fantastic, walking distance to everything. Secure apartment building off the main street. Great modern apartment throughout and cosy but comfortable lounge and kitchen area. Beds were super comfy as well - enough space in the second bedroom for a portable cot to be set up. Lovely views as well. Parking was easy and just across the road, lower price if you pre-book via First Parking.
