Character and Charm on Emerald Hill Overview

I remember pulling up to Character and Charm on Emerald Hill after a quick tram ride down Clarendon Street – you know, the one that zips you from the CBD right into South Melbourne without much fuss. It’s tucked away in this leafy pocket of 3205, where those grand old Victorian terraces line the streets, and honestly, it feels like you’ve stepped back in time a bit, but in the best way. The hotel itself is one of those converted heritage buildings on Emerald Hill – yeah, that historic rise with views over the bay on a clear day – and my first thought was, “This place has got some serious personality.” No sterile lobby here; you walk in to this cozy reception area with polished floorboards that creak just enough to remind you it’s got history, and there’s always a faint whiff of fresh eucalyptus from the diffusers they use. Check-in was a breeze – the staff are locals, chatty without being overbearing, and they even tipped me off about the best spot for coffee on Coventry Street, which is literally a five-minute stroll away. Parking? Well, it’s street parking mostly, so if you’re driving, aim for off-peak hours or you might circle a bit, but that’s South Melbourne for you – charming but not always convenient for cars.

What really sold me on this 4-star gem was how it balances that old-world charm with just the right modern touches. My room was on the second floor, overlooking a quiet garden courtyard – think soft linen sheets that feel like they’ve been ironed by hand, and a bathroom with those rain showerheads that make you linger a little too long in the morning. It’s not massive, mind you; the spaces are cozy, sort of like staying in a well-loved aunt’s spare room, but with high ceilings and original fireplaces that add this warmth you don’t get in chain hotels. Breakfast downstairs is a highlight – they do these smashed avo toasts with local produce from the South Melbourne Market (which, by the way, is a must-visit on Wednesdays for the dim sims and fresh oysters), and it’s all served in a sunlit atrium that buzzes quietly with other guests swapping stories. I mean, it’s rated a solid 9 for a reason; the Wi-Fi’s reliable, there’s a small gym if you’re into that, and they even have bikes you can borrow to cruise over to Albert Park Lake. Oh, and if you’re here during the Formula 1 Grand Prix season – that track’s right nearby – book early because it gets lively, with engines revving in the distance, but the double-glazed windows keep most of the noise out. One minor gripe? The air con can be a tad finicky on humid nights, but nothing a quick call to reception couldn’t fix.

All in all, if you’re after a spot that feels authentically Melbourne without the tourist trap vibe, this is it. You’re close enough to hop on a tram to St Kilda Beach for sunset walks or wander to the city for laneway bars, but far enough from the hustle that you can actually unwind. I’ve stayed in fancier places, sure, but there’s something about waking up to birds chirping in those heritage trees and knowing you’re in a neighborhood locals love – it just makes the trip memorable. Honestly, for couples or solo travelers who appreciate character over cookie-cutter luxury, Character and Charm on Emerald Hill is a winner; I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the jacarandas are blooming.

Reviews of Character and Charm on Emerald Hill

  • Amazing town house and location – Jasmina from Australia – 15 April 2025 (10/10)

Detailed information was provided on how to enter the property.

  • Fantastic – Adams from Australia – 17 March 2025 (10/10)

Convenience of the location, as it was handy to everything that I needed, and would highly recommend, Hopefully I get the option to stay here again,

What could be improved: Could not fault anything

  • Superb – Greg from Australia – 21 January 2025 (9/10)

We had a swimming competition at MSAC over 5 days and this was such a perfect location. The car stayed in the provided off street driveway and we walked to and fro from MSAC. Walked to Crown to see the Christmas decorations and show. There is a tram on Clarendon St that takes you right to the city. South Melbourne market was an easy walk.
Each morning we did a walk around Albert Park lake to kick off the day which was about a 5km round trip from the apartment.
I was a little worried about noise from Trams and traffic on Clarendon St but the lounge room faced the street and the bedrooms were set to the back so noise was no issue for sleeping.
Great place and location to stay.

What could be improved: It is not that we did not like it but just for info you want good mobility as the stairs to the first floor with the bedrooms are VERY steep.

  • Superb – Karmiina from Australia – 24 February 2024 (9/10)

The place was clean, comfortable, nicely presented, in a good location with a tram stop close by and many restaurants on the main street to choose from.

What could be improved: The stairs leading up to the bedrooms and living area are quite steep and the steps themselves are a little small but we got used to it after a while.

The car park is also very tight if you’ve got a bigger car. We managed just fine though with lots of tight reversing and having a couple people guide the driver.

  • Modern refurbished accommodation – Jaktd from Australia – 6 September 2023 (10/10)

Well maintained modern refurbished accommodation with quality furnishings and essentials. Everything you need with a central location & internal secure parking. Has steep stairs to the upstairs lounge bathroom and bedrooms so may not be suitable for the less ambulant. Contact was good and pretty much instant replys. Great place to stay thanx.

What could be improved: Roller door is accessed by the key pad only. Keys are for the actual doors once you are inside the courtyard as i spent about 5 mins trying to figure this out as there is a key box & a key pad & we checked in in the dark. No mirror apart from the bathroom cabinet.
