Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon the City Center Apt with Separate Office and Lovely Views during a quick work trip to Melbourne last spring, and honestly, it turned out to be one of those hidden gems that makes you rethink staying in big chain hotels. Tucked away on Balston Street in Southbank – that’s the lively riverside neighborhood just across the Yarra from the CBD – it’s got this unassuming vibe from the outside, like any other high-rise in the area. But step inside unit 1202W, and bam, you’re hit with these floor-to-ceiling windows framing the city skyline and the river bending lazily below. I remember arriving around dusk after a tram ride from Flinders Street Station (super easy, by the way – the 109 line drops you practically at the doorstep), and the check-in was a breeze with a key code system. No fussing with front desks, though I did have to lug my bags up in the elevator, which can get a bit crowded during peak hours when everyone’s heading out to the nearby Crown Casino or the Southbank Promenade for dinner.
What really sets this place apart – and I mean, it’s why I’d book it again in a heartbeat – is that separate office nook. It’s not just some corner desk; it’s a proper little room with a comfy chair, decent lighting, and even a view out over the water, which made my remote meetings feel way less like a chore. The whole apartment’s got that modern, airy feel, with plush bedding that smells faintly of fresh linen (none of that musty hotel staleness), and a kitchenette stocked enough for whipping up a quick brekkie – think Nespresso pods and a microwave that doesn’t sound like a jet engine. Southbank can get noisy, especially on weekends with the crowds spilling out from the arts center or the bars along the river, but up on the 12th floor, it’s surprisingly peaceful at night; I barely heard the traffic hum from St Kilda Road below. Oh, and parking – if you’re driving in, there’s secure spots in the building, but book ahead because they fill up fast during events like the Australian Open. One minor gripe? The Wi-Fi dipped a couple times in the evening, probably from everyone streaming – nothing a quick reset didn’t fix, but worth noting if you’re bandwidth-heavy.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants to blend work and play without feeling trapped in a sterile box, this 4-star spot with its 9.3 rating is spot-on. It’s perfect for solo travelers or couples hitting Melbourne in the quieter shoulder seasons, like autumn when the leaves along the river turn golden and the crowds thin out. You can wander over to the NGV for some culture, grab dumplings at one of those hole-in-the-wall spots on Clarendon Street, or just chill on the balcony with a coffee watching the ferries glide by. Sure, it’s not the cheapest option around, but for the views and that homey setup, it feels like a steal – I left thinking, well, why bother with anything else next time?
