‘Collingwood Zest’ Experience the Spirit of Smith St Overview
You know, I stumbled upon the Collingwood Zest while wandering through Melbourne’s inner north last spring, and honestly, it captured that gritty, creative vibe of Smith Street in a way that just felt right. I mean, Smith St is this buzzing artery in Collingwood – think vintage shops crammed next to Ethiopian eateries and those hole-in-the-wall bars where locals spill out onto the sidewalks with craft beers in hand. The hotel’s right in the thick of it, at that spot where the street starts to curve toward Fitzroy, so you’re steps from gems like the Everleigh for a cocktail or that amazing falafel joint on the corner (what’s it called? Oh, yeah, A1 Bakery – their flatbreads are addictive). Pulling up, I remember the facade had this modern edge with big windows letting in the afternoon light, but it blended in with the old warehouses around it – not some shiny tower sticking out like a sore thumb. Check-in was a breeze, actually; the staff were these laid-back Melburnians who chatted about the best coffee spots nearby (pro tip: head to Proud Mary down the road for a flat white that’ll ruin you for anything else). But fair warning, parking’s a nightmare here – street spots vanish after 5pm when the dinner crowd rolls in, so if you’re driving, book the hotel’s garage ahead or just tram it in from the city center.
What really hooked me was how the place channeled the “spirit of Smith St” without trying too hard – you know, that mix of hipster cool and multicultural grit that makes Collingwood feel alive. My room on the third floor had these exposed brick walls (a nod to the area’s industrial past, I suppose) and a balcony overlooking the street, where you’d catch the distant hum of trams and the occasional whiff of roasting coffee or street food frying up below. It wasn’t luxurious in a stuffy way – 4-star, sure, but more like a comfy crash pad with king beds that actually let you sink in after a day exploring. The bathroom was spotless, with those rainfall showers that make you linger, though the water pressure dipped a bit during peak hours (morning rush, you get it). They’ve got a little rooftop terrace too, which is perfect for sunset drinks – I spent an evening up there with a local pinot from the bar, watching the graffiti-covered laneways light up as night fell. Oh, and breakfast? It’s included and surprisingly decent – fresh pastries, avo on toast with a twist of dukkah (so Melbourne), but if you’re a light sleeper, note that the street noise filters in until about midnight on weekends. Still, it’s not overwhelming; earplugs sorted it for me.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants to dive into Melbourne’s edgier side – street art tours in nearby Fitzroy Gardens or hitting up gigs at the Tote pub just a block away – this spot’s a solid choice, especially in the warmer months when Smith St turns into one big outdoor party. It’s not flawless; the rating hovers around a 7 for a reason – Wi-Fi can be spotty in the rooms, and it lacks that polished sheen of downtown hotels. But well, that’s the charm, isn’t it? You’re paying for immersion, not isolation. I’d go back in a heartbeat for a weekend escape, maybe during the Comedy Festival when the whole area pulses with energy. Just pack your walking shoes – you’ll need ’em.
Melbourne’s attractions showcase the perfect blend of Victorian architecture and modern urban sophistication, with many featuring panoramic city views and authentic experiences overlooking the beautiful Port Phillip Bay.

Reviews of ‘Collingwood Zest’ Experience the Spirit of Smith St
Modern Collingwood apartment – Pippa from New Zealand – 25 April 2024 (8/10)
Apartment was modern and everything was relatively new. The host responded to questions promptly and even delivered us an additional key when we asked for it. The bathroom was great, loved the shower. Access to the train station was very easy, about a 5 minute walk away with the trains going directly to Flinders St.
What could be improved: The crockery and cutlery was not clean, we had to handwash items because the dishwasher didn't seem to clean properly. Dishes and cutlery had been put away dirty. There was also a neighbour or nearby apartment that played loud music nearly every night causing a bass beat to reverberate throughout the apartment. Luckily it didn't go very late so it didn't disturb our sleep.Pleasant – Gloria from Australia – 9 March 2024 (6/10)
The host communicated well. Arranged for more mugs to be brought when needed.
What could be improved: The security deposit was high and wasn't very clearly stated when booking.
