Comfort Hotel East Melbourne Overview
I remember pulling up to the Comfort Hotel East Melbourne on a drizzly afternoon last spring – you know, that time of year when the city starts shedding its winter chill and the jacarandas on nearby streets like Hotham or Powlett begin to bloom purple. It’s tucked away on Albert Street, right in the heart of East Melbourne, which honestly feels like a hidden gem if you’re not a local. I mean, it’s just a short stroll from Fitzroy Gardens – I popped over there one morning for a coffee and ended up wandering among those massive elms, dodging joggers and the occasional magpie swoop (watch out for those cheeky birds in nesting season). The hotel itself has this unpretentious vibe; it’s a solid four-star spot without trying too hard to be flashy. Check-in was a breeze – the front desk folks were chatty Aussies who tipped me off about the best tram stop on Victoria Parade for zipping into the CBD, which is literally five minutes away on foot if you’re up for it. Parking’s a bit of a squeeze, though; they have a small lot, but if it’s full, you’re hunting for spots on the street, and let’s just say the meters aren’t cheap during peak hours.
Stepping into my room, it was one of those places that surprises you with how comfy it feels right away – think crisp white sheets that smell faintly of fresh laundry, and a balcony overlooking a quiet patch of greenery (well, sort of; there’s a bit of traffic hum from Wellington Parade in the evenings, but nothing that kept me up). The decor’s modern but not over-the-top, with those plush armchairs you actually sink into after a day exploring. Breakfast downstairs is straightforward – eggs, toast, decent coffee from a machine that doesn’t taste like regret – and it’s included in most rates, which is a win when you’re budgeting for Melbourne’s pricey eats. I appreciated the little touches, like the free Wi-Fi that didn’t glitch out (unlike some spots I’ve stayed in the city), and the mini-fridge stocked with local beers if you fancy a quiet night in. That said, it’s not flawless; the bathroom was clean but a tad dated, with tiles that echoed a bit too much underfoot, and the air-con took a minute to kick in during that one humid spell we had. Still, for a 7-rated hotel, it punches above its weight – especially if you’re here for the cricket or footy at the MCG, which is basically across the road; I caught a game and walked back in under 10 minutes, dodging the post-match crowds on Brunswick Street.
All in all, if you’re looking for a no-fuss base to dive into Melbourne without the chaos of staying right in Federation Square, this place hits the spot. It’s got that authentic East Melbourne quietness – mornings filled with the rustle of leaves and distant tram bells – yet you’re close enough to hop on a bike path along the Yarra River or grab dumplings in Chinatown. Honestly, I’d go back in a heartbeat for a weekend getaway; just pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper during Grand Final week, when the whole area buzzes with energy. At the end of the day, it’s the kind of hotel that makes you feel like you’ve got the city figured out, without breaking the bank.

Reviews of Comfort Hotel East Melbourne
Comfortable, but needs upgrading – Karen from Australia – 13 July 2025 (8/10)
The room exceeded my expectations. After reading the reviews i was pleasantly surprised. As i walked in i saw a kitchenette with kettle, microwave sink and toaster, and own bathroom, the biggest king bed, which was very comfortable. The pressure in the shower was great, and the split system heater kept us toasty warm. We also had a sofa bed.
What could be improved: Their was only one bin, so if you have a couple of cans then the bins full. The bathroom has some cracked tiles, and mould which was painted over. The windows have no fly wire screens, the sofa bed had cat scratches up the sides and it was covered in pet hair and food crumbs. So much we couldn't sit on it. The carpet also had pet hair all over it which stuck to my socks. My advise would be to have some pet friendly rooms. Not all of them. I would choose a room that didn't allow pets. I would expect to not have pet hair on furniture and carpet.Great location, great value for money. – Shelley from Australia – 13 June 2025 (8/10)
Close to MCG. Ground floor room.
What could be improved: We were in Room 15. There needed to be a sheer curtain behind the block out curtains. We had the curtains open for natural lighting, but people were walking down the laneway and looking into our room.Very good – Robyn from Australia – 3 June 2025 (8/10)
Loved the bed and pillows and that we could bring our dog
What could be improved: Limited parking onsite during no parking hours on streetNice surprise – Graeme from Australia – 30 May 2025 (8/10)

Nice stay in Melbourne – Amanda from Australia – 19 April 2025 (8/10)
Very comfortable, close to public transport, has a cafe right downstairs, staff was helpful.
What could be improved: Wifi didn't work. They have multiple networks and they said we could login to any, but none had a steady signal.Great – Suzanne from Australia – 25 January 2025 (8/10)
Cafe great
What could be improved: Shower a little tight to get inOkay for the price but needs some repairs – Christine from Australia – 24 January 2025 (6/10)
Good location and was very clean, but needs some repairs in spots
What could be improved: Parking so narrow our car has a huge scratch down the side from the bushes on one side – so narrow had to put the mirrors in to get through. Plastic Toilet seat has been heated up so now has terrible bubbling plastic peeling off. Not pleasant to sit on.Everything went well except for the grumpy departure. I would return due to the other benefits. – Peter from Australia – 22 January 2025 (8/10)
The location was excellent for access to the city with a lovely walk through the gardens, and closeness to the hospital which I had to attend.
The room was large, clean and modern.
It was very quiet, wonderful.
The ladies at reception at check in were friendly and helpful, thank you.
What could be improved: On checking out in the morning the man at the desk was quite abrupt and grumpy. He was more interested in the computer than attending to my departure – disappointing!
