Well, it’s street parking mostly, and during peak hours or when the Grand Prix is on in March, you’ll want to circle a bit or snag a spot early – I learned that the hard way after looping around twice. The building itself has this modern, glassy facade that catches the afternoon sun just right, making the whole place shimmer like it’s straight out of a postcard. Check-in was a breeze; no fuss at the front desk, just a friendly local bloke who handed over the keys and chatted about the best coffee on Clarendon Street – try the little cafe called Auction Rooms, it’s a five-minute walk and their flat whites are killer.

What really sold me on AquaLuna, though, was how it feels more like crashing at a mate’s stylish flat than some sterile hotel room. These are proper apartments, you see – spacious one- or two-bedroom setups with full kitchens (stocked with basics like a Nespresso machine, thank goodness) and balconies overlooking the park. I stayed in a fourth-floor unit, and waking up to the scent of eucalyptus from the nearby trees, mixed with that fresh Melbourne morning air, was pure bliss. The beds are comfy, with those plush pillows that actually support your neck – none of that rock-hard nonsense you get in cheaper spots. There’s a rooftop pool that’s heated year-round, which is a godsend during those unpredictable winters when the wind whips off Port Phillip Bay. Oh, and the Wi-Fi is solid, fast enough for streaming without buffering, but fair warning: the walls are a tad thin, so if you’ve got noisy neighbors, you might hear a bit of chatter late at night. I appreciated the little touches, like the laundry facilities in-unit (saved me a fortune on dry cleaning) and the fact that it’s pet-friendly – saw a couple with their golden retriever lounging in the lobby, which added to that homey feel. It’s not perfect; the gym is basic, just some free weights and a treadmill, so if you’re a fitness nut, you might wander over to the paths around Albert Park Lake for a jog instead – they’re gorgeous at dawn, with ducks quacking away and hardly anyone around before 7 AM.

All in all, if you’re after a four-star stay that punches above its weight with an 8.7 rating that feels earned, AquaLuna is worth it, especially for families or longer trips where you want space to spread out. It’s close enough to the CBD – hop on the 12 tram and you’re at Federation Square in 15 minutes – but far enough from the tourist crush that you can unwind properly. I left feeling like I’d discovered a hidden gem; next time I’m in town for the Australian Open in January, this is where I’ll book again.
