Complete Host Degraves St Apartments
I remember stumbling out of Flinders Street Station one drizzly Melbourne morning, dodging the usual swarm of commuters and tram bells, and thinking, "Okay, this better be worth the hike with my backpack." But honestly, turning onto Degraves Street – you know, that iconic laneway packed with those hole-in-the-wall cafes where the air smells like fresh espresso and buttery croissants – and spotting the entrance to Complete Host Degraves St Apartments felt like hitting the jackpot.
I remember stumbling out of Flinders Street Station one drizzly Melbourne morning, dodging the usual swarm of commuters and tram bells, and thinking, “Okay, this better be worth the hike with my backpack.” But honestly, turning onto Degraves Street – you know, that iconic laneway packed with those hole-in-the-wall cafes where the air smells like fresh espresso and buttery croissants – and spotting the entrance to Complete Host Degraves St Apartments felt like hitting the jackpot. It’s right in the thick of it, smack in Melbourne’s CBD at postcode 3000, just a stone’s throw from Federation Square and the Yarra River. I mean, if you’re into that vibrant, artsy side of the city, with Hosier Lane’s graffiti walls basically around the corner for your morning Instagram fix, this spot nails it. The building itself is one of those understated modern setups – not flashy, but clean and welcoming, with a buzzer system for check-in that was a breeze even when I arrived jet-lagged at 10 PM. No fuss, just a quick code entry, and boom, you’re in. Parking’s a bit of a nightmare though, like anywhere in the city center – I ended up ditching my rental at a nearby multi-story lot on Collins Street, which stung the wallet a tad, but hey, that’s urban living for you.
What really sold me on the place – and it’s rated a solid 8.7 for good reason, with four stars that feel earned – was how the apartments themselves feel like a proper home base amid the chaos. Mine was a one-bedroom deal on the third floor, overlooking the laneway bustle without being too noisy at night (well, except for the occasional late-night revelers spilling out from the bars below – earplugs helped). The kitchenette was a lifesaver – fully stocked with a microwave, fridge, and even a little dishwasher, so I whipped up avo toast from Queen Victoria Market goodies instead of eating out every meal. The bed was comfy, king-sized with those crisp white sheets that smell faintly of lavender detergent, and the bathroom had a rain shower that washed away the day’s grime from wandering Bourke Street Mall. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times during peak evening hours, probably from all the tourists streaming Netflix – but for a self-contained apartment, it beats cramped hotel rooms hands down. And get this, during the quieter winter months (June to August, when Melbourne’s chill sets in), the place feels even more serene, like your own little cocoon while the laneways outside hum with fewer crowds.
Look, if you’re planning a trip to Melbourne and want to dive headfirst into its soul – the street art, the hidden bars on Flinders Lane, the easy tram hops to St Kilda Beach – I’d say book Complete Host without hesitation. It’s not some sterile chain; it’s got that authentic, lived-in charm that makes you feel like a local, even if you’re just passing through. Sure, the city noise might keep light sleepers up, but that’s Melbourne for you – alive and kicking. At the end of the day, after exploring all day, coming back here felt like a warm hug. Totally worth it, especially if you’re traveling solo or with a partner who appreciates a bit of independence.

What Our Guests Say
Very clean and comfortable
Very central and good amenities - felt like a home away from home.
Best feature is the location, we wanted to be close to Flinders Street Station and a supermarket. Personally, I also liked the background urban noise from the busy restaurants in the laneway outside the first floor window, but it would not suit someone looking for a quiet night.
