Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to Complete Host The Fifth Apartments after a quick tram ride from Southern Cross Station – you know, that massive hub where the Skybus dumps you off from Tullamarine Airport. It’s smack in the middle of Melbourne’s CBD, right around the 3000 postcode area where Collins Street meets the bustle of Spencer Street. Honestly, finding parking was a bit of a hassle if you’re driving – those narrow laneways get clogged during peak hours, especially with all the office workers spilling out around 5 PM. But once I stepped inside, it felt like a welcome escape from the city’s hum. The lobby’s got this sleek, modern vibe with polished concrete floors that echo just a tad, and the check-in was a breeze – the staff handed over the keys with a genuine “G’day” and a tip about the best nearby coffee spot (turns out, it’s a little hole-in-the-wall on Little Collins that does killer flat whites). My apartment was on a higher floor, and opening the door, I was hit with that fresh, just-cleaned scent – like linen and a hint of eucalyptus, which is so Melbourne.
What really sets this place apart, though, is how it feels more like a local’s pad than some sterile hotel room. These are proper apartments, you see – fully equipped kitchens with those fancy Smeg appliances (I mean, who doesn’t love whipping up brekkie with a view?), spacious living areas with comfy leather couches that you actually sink into, and bedrooms that block out the street noise surprisingly well, even with the trams clanging by every few minutes. I stayed during spring, when the jacaranda trees along the Yarra River start blooming purple – and from my balcony, the view over the city skyline, with the Bolte Bridge lit up at night, was just magical. It’s a solid 4-star setup, but the rating’s a perfect 10 for a reason; little touches like high-thread-count sheets and a welcome basket with Tim Tams made it feel thoughtful. That said, the Wi-Fi could be spotty during busy evenings – probably all those remote workers in the building – so if you’re streaming, pack an Ethernet cable just in case. Wandering out, you’re steps from the Queen Victoria Market for fresh produce (go early on weekends to beat the crowds), or you can hop on the free City Circle tram to Federation Square for events. And in summer, when Melbourne heats up, the air-con here is a lifesaver – whisper-quiet and effective, unlike some older spots in the area that rattle like an old fan.
Look, if you’re visiting Melbourne and want that balance of city energy without the chaos, this is your spot. It’s perfect for families or longer stays – I was there for a week and didn’t miss a hotel buffet once, thanks to the self-catering setup. Well, maybe I did miss the pool (there isn’t one, but the rooftop terrace compensates with those sunset views). Overall, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve got a foothold in the real Melbourne – close enough to the laneway bars on Hardware Lane for a cheeky pint, yet tucked away for some peace. I’d book it again in a heartbeat, especially off-season in winter when rates drop and the city’s cozy vibe shines through.
