Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon the Courtyard by Marriott Melbourne Flagstaff Gardens kind of by accident last spring – I was in town for a conference and needed something not too flashy but reliable, and honestly, it turned out to be a gem tucked away on Batman Street in West Melbourne. It’s right there at 50 Batman Street, just a stone’s throw from Flagstaff Gardens, which is this lush, underrated park where locals jog or picnic under those massive Moreton Bay figs. I mean, if you’re coming from the airport, it’s an easy 20-minute drive via the Tullamarine Freeway, but watch out for that peak-hour snarl on Dudley Street – I got caught in it once and ended up circling for parking. The hotel’s got its own spots underground, though they’re a bit tight if you’ve got a bigger car, and at around $30 a day, it’s not cheap, but better than hunting for street parking in this neighborhood. Walking in, the lobby hit me with that fresh, citrusy scent from whatever diffuser they use – not overpowering, just welcoming after a long flight. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were chatty Aussies who tipped me off about the best tram stop on William Street for getting to the CBD without the crowds.

What really sold me was how the place balances that Marriott polish with a laid-back Melbourne vibe – the rooms are spacious, with those plush beds that actually let you sink in (I slept like a log after exploring all day), and big windows that frame views of the gardens or the city skyline, depending on your floor. I stayed in one facing west, and catching the sunset over the treetops while sipping a flat white from their lobby cafe was pure bliss – they source beans from local roasters, you know, none of that generic chain stuff. There’s a decent gym downstairs with free weights and ellipticals, perfect for shaking off jet lag, and the on-site restaurant does a solid brekkie buffet with avo on toast and fresh juices, though it gets busy around 8 AM on weekdays when business folks pile in. Oh, and if you’re into evening unwind, their bar serves up craft beers from nearby breweries like Moon Dog – I tried one with hints of passionfruit, which paired nicely with the quiet hum of the place after dark. It’s not dead silent at night, mind you; you might hear faint traffic from Spencer Street if your room’s on that side, but the double-glazed windows keep it mellow. Well, except during footy season when Marvel Stadium’s just a 10-minute walk away – the post-game crowds can spill over, adding a bit of energy (or chaos, depending on your mood).

All in all, if you’re visiting Melbourne and want a spot that’s close enough to the action – think a quick stroll to Queen Victoria Market for those amazing doughnuts or a tram ride to Lygon Street for Italian eats – but far enough to escape the tourist crush, this Courtyard is a smart pick. It’s got that 4-star reliability with an 8.9 rating that feels earned, not inflated, and at quieter times like mid-week in autumn, you can snag deals that make it feel like a steal. Sure, it’s not the ritziest – no spa or infinity pool here – but for travelers like me who value practical perks over flash, it’s spot on. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially for that garden proximity; nothing beats starting your day with birdsong instead of blaring horns.

The reception staff were most accommodating, particularly Vanessa and Harley(?) – nothing was a problem, and all interactions were very smooth, friendly, and professional. The central location was perfect. I found that both the super comfy beds and the rain shower were very hard to will myself back out of 👌🏻. Due to our transport arrangements, we needed to arrive early and leave late, but we were able to securely leave our luggage with the hotel outside of our check-in. While we didn't get the chance to use them, I appreciate the availability of the gym and the on-site restaurant. Very pleased with our stay!

The staff were friendly and accommodating, they would always great you or ask how you were whenever you walked past the front desk. My daughter was very impressed that when our beds were made while we were out that they tucked her bunny in for her.
