Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to 105 Clarendon Street in Southbank after a long drive from the airport – you know, that stretch where you’re dodging trams and trying not to get lost in the one-way streets around the CBD. Honestly, the building itself doesn’t scream “fancy hotel” from the outside; it’s one of those sleek high-rises that blend into the Southbank skyline, but once you step inside, it’s a whole different vibe. Check-in was a breeze – no stuffy front desk, just a quick code for the secure entry and an elevator that whisks you up to level 39 without a hitch. I mean, if you’re arriving late like I did, around 9 PM during peak season in summer, expect a bit of buzz from the street below, what with the crowds spilling out from Crown Casino just a short walk away on the Yarra’s edge. But hey, that’s Melbourne for you – lively, even on a weeknight.
What really sold me on this place, the Designer Southbank Apt (they call it #5 SH39, which sounds a tad cryptic but whatever), was that insane view from the 39th floor. Picture this: floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the twinkling lights of the city, with the Eureka Tower piercing the sky right across the way and the Yarra River snaking below like a dark ribbon. I spent my first morning there sipping coffee on the balcony – well, it’s more of a compact outdoor space, but the breeze carries that faint salty tang from Port Phillip Bay, mixed with the aroma of fresh pastries from the South Melbourne Market, which is literally a 10-minute stroll down Clarendon if you fancy grabbing some dim sims or organic produce. The apartment itself feels designer-y without being over-the-top; think minimalist kitchen with shiny appliances (I actually cooked a stir-fry one night, and the induction stove was a dream), a comfy king bed that doesn’t creak like some budget spots, and a bathroom with those rain shower heads that make you linger. Oh, and parking – it’s available in the building’s secure garage, but spots can fill up fast during events at the MCG, so book ahead if you’re driving. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly quiet up high, though you might hear the occasional tram ding from below if the windows are open – sort of adds to the urban charm, I suppose.
All in all, if you’re after a solid 4-star stay that’s more like a stylish home base than a generic hotel room – and let’s be real, with an 8/10 rating, it’s got that sweet spot of value without the frills you don’t need – this is it. I’ve stayed in pricier spots across the river in the CBD, but this one’s got that authentic Southbank feel, close enough to wander over to the NGV for some art or hop a tram to Federation Square. Just a heads-up, winter mornings can be chilly on that balcony with the wind whipping up from the south, so pack layers. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better perch for watching the city wake up, especially if you’re traveling solo or with a partner who appreciates a killer view over room service bells and whistles.
