Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to the Elwood Star-Beachside Retreat on Tennyson Street – you know, that quiet stretch in Elwood where the houses have those old-school verandas and the air always smells a bit salty from the bay. It’s tucked away in this leafy suburb, just a stone’s throw from Elwood Beach, which is honestly one of Melbourne’s underrated spots – not as flashy as St Kilda down the road, but way more chill, especially if you’re dodging the tourist crowds. I arrived mid-afternoon during spring, when the jacarandas are blooming all over, and check-in was a breeze; the staff – mostly locals with that easygoing Aussie vibe – had my room ready in minutes, no fuss about parking either, since they’ve got a few spots out back (though street parking can get tight on weekends when everyone heads to the foreshore). Walking in, the lobby felt more like a cozy beach house than a hotel – think polished timber floors that creak just a little underfoot, fresh coffee brewing from a machine that actually makes decent flat whites, and big windows letting in that soft, filtered light from the eucalypts outside. Oh, and there’s this subtle scent of lemongrass from their diffusers, which sort of masks the occasional whiff of sea breeze – not overpowering, but it sets a relaxed tone right away.

What really sold me on the place was how it nails that beachside retreat feel without trying too hard. My room was on the upper floor, overlooking Tennyson – nothing fancy like ocean views (that’s a minor bummer if you’re expecting postcard panoramas, but hey, the beach is literally a five-minute stroll away via the path along Elwood Canal, where you’ll spot joggers and dog walkers at dawn). The bed was plush, with those crisp white linens that feel cool against your skin after a day out, and the bathroom had a rain shower that actually had good pressure – none of that weak trickle you get in some spots. I mean, it’s a solid 4-star setup, with a small balcony where I sipped my morning tea listening to the distant hum of waves and the occasional tram rattling along Glen Huntly Road nearby. Noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful; Elwood’s not party central like Fitzroy or the CBD, so evenings are quiet except maybe during summer festivals when St Kilda lights up a couple of kilometers away. They do a continental breakfast downstairs – fresh pastries from a bakery on Ormond Road, I think – and it’s included, which is a nice touch for keeping things low-key. Honestly, the high rating (like 9.5) makes sense; it’s the little things, like the complimentary bikes for cruising to Ripponlea Village for lunch, that make you feel like you’re staying with friends who know the area inside out.

If you’re heading to Melbourne and want a spot that’s close enough to the action – say, a quick drive or tram to the city center – but far enough to unwind, this is it. Well, sort of – it’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi can lag a bit in peak hours, and if you’re a light sleeper, the early bird sounds from the park across the street might wake you. But overall, it’s the kind of place that sticks with you, you know? I left feeling recharged, already plotting my next visit for that winter beach walk when the crowds thin out. If beach vibes without the hype are your thing, book it – you won’t regret it.

The property is spacious. Great for big family. Very cozy and clean. We all love it. It has everything we needed.

  • Nicky from United Kingdom (10/10)

Perfect for our family stay, that included a six year old, and my elderly husband who has Parkinson's. The younger members of the family had the upstairs to themselves, and we had our space downstairs. The house is really lovely, with plenty of space. It's very close to a supermarket and cafe, with easy links to the city. We were all very happy with our stay there.

Great location and plenty of space for a family of 5.

  • Claire from United Kingdom (10/10)

Great space, clean and tidy, and walking distance to the township and public transport. Would definitely stay again.

  • Mary from Australia (8/10)

The property was immaculate and easily fitted our group of 5 people. Everything you needed was on hand. I would have given a high rating all round if it wasn't for the front door/window issue.

  • Elli from Australia (9/10)

Great location, a nice spacious townhouse with a private courtyard that was perfect for our child’s playtime. The townhouse has a lot of nice natural light and an ambient feel. Appreciated the toys in the wardrobes.
