Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to the Extra Large 2 Bedroom Apartment in Melbourne’s Southbank on a drizzly afternoon last spring – you know, that time of year when the Yarra River looks all moody and the jacaranda trees are just starting to bloom along City Road. It’s tucked right there in the heart of Southbank, postcode 3006, super close to the promenade where everyone strolls for those killer views of the city skyline. Honestly, finding parking was a bit of a hassle – I mean, it’s Melbourne, so expect to circle a few blocks or shell out for the nearby multi-level car parks on Kavanagh Street – but once I got inside, it felt like a proper escape from the bustle. The check-in was straightforward; no fancy lobby, just a quick key handover from the host who chatted about the best coffee spots nearby, like that little hidden gem, Auction Rooms, over in North Melbourne if you’re willing to hop on a tram. Walking in, the place hit me with this fresh, airy vibe – high ceilings, big windows letting in that soft southern light, and a faint scent of eucalyptus from the cleaning products, which sort of reminded me of the Dandenong Ranges on a weekend drive.

What really sold me on this spot was how massive it is for a 4-star apartment – we’re talking extra large, like you could host a small family reunion without anyone bumping elbows. The two bedrooms are generous, with those plush queen beds that actually feel supportive after a day traipsing around the NGV (that’s the National Gallery of Victoria, just a 10-minute walk across the river via the pedestrian bridge). The living area spills out onto a balcony overlooking the Yarra, where you can sip your morning flat white and watch the rowers glide by – it’s peaceful in the early hours, but come evening, you might hear the faint hum from Crown Casino down on Queensbridge Street, especially on weekends when the crowds spill out. The kitchen’s fully kitted out, which was a lifesaver; I whipped up some avo on toast using stuff from the South Melbourne Market, about a 15-minute stroll away. Oh, and the bathroom – well, it’s modern with a rain shower that packs a punch, though the hot water took a second to kick in, nothing major. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi dipped a bit during peak times, probably from all the high-rises around – but for an 8.6 rating, it delivers that homey feel without skimping on the essentials, like in-unit laundry that saved me from hunting down a laundromat.

Look, if you’re heading to Melbourne for a mix of city vibes and some downtime, this apartment’s a smart pick, especially for groups or families who want space without the hotel stiffness. It’s smack in the arts precinct, so you’re steps from the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art or catching a show at the Malthouse Theatre – and don’t get me started on the food scene; grab dumplings at HuTong on Market Lane if you’re venturing into the CBD. I stayed during the quieter shoulder season, but I’d bet it books up fast in summer with the Australian Open crowds flooding Southbank. Overall, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a local – comfortable, convenient for exploring, and yeah, I’d book it again in a heartbeat. (Just pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper – those trams on St Kilda Road can rattle on till late.)

Reviews

  • Great location. – Nvought from Australia – 18 June 2025 (9/10)

Great location. Secure building. Close to transport and grocery.
2 bathrooms. Bath for the kids.
    Washing machine and dryer.

What could be improved: The balcony rails are a concern, for kids climbing them.
The high chair was unusable as had been folded up incorrectly.

  • We immensely appreciated its location, facilities and value for money. All family members request to book here for futur – Puna from Australia – 14 March 2025 (10/10)

Proximity to the locales we wished to visit
Access to tennis courts-gym-swimming pool was brilliant

  • Superb – John from Australia – 17 November 2024 (9/10)

Location was perfect for city, trams, access to Westgate Bridge and Nepean /SE/E suburbs.
Easy to get key – friendly & helpful.
    Easy to park.
    Very clean
    Very comfortable.

What could be improved: Sorry we broke a glass.
    Nothing we didn't like.

  • Good comfortable stay and good value for money. – Manish from Australia – 29 April 2025 (8/10)

    1) Good value for money.
    2) Near to CBD.
    3) Amenities weresufficient for family stay

What could be improved: 1) Cleanliness could have been improved a bit. Saw couple of small spider web near the room window.
    But overall it was ok.

  • Spacious apartment – Lisa from Australia – 31 October 2023 (10/10)

    Very spacious

What could be improved: Instructions for parking were incorrect, ensuite shower was blocked, wasn't as clean as you'd expect, not many basic grocery items.

  • absolutely enjoyed our stay and would stay again – Kate from Australia – 5 March 2023 (8/10)

great location great property . .

What could be improved: when booking the place it felt like a scam with all the ID stuff and was a pain to get and return the keys at the supermarket.

  • Passable – Margaret from Australia – 17 April 2024 (5/10)

What could be improved: The lounge being set up as a bed was not a good idea as we couldn't make it go back into a lounge.
Collecting the key was a nightmare at the IGA as the person appeared to be confused as to the correct keys necessitating us phoning you and being delayed.
Unfortunately we had travelled from home in NSW that day and didn't stay anywhere else but on the second day of our stay in the two bedroom apartment we discovered Bed Bugs and bites which were confirmed by our doctor when we got home. This meant hours of treating our clothes, bed linen etc.
Perhaps this apartment needs to be treated for Bed Bugs before anyone else stays there.
