Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to the Fawkner Executive Suites & Serviced Apartments after a long drive from Tullamarine Airport – you know, that stretch along the Hume Highway that can feel endless if you’re jet-lagged. It’s right there on Sydney Road, smack in the middle of Fawkner, which is this underrated northern suburb about 15 minutes from the city center if traffic’s behaving. Honestly, I was skeptical at first because Sydney Road’s got that constant hum of trams and delivery trucks during the day, but the place surprised me. The building looks modern without trying too hard – sort of sleek brick facade with big windows – and parking was a breeze; they have undercover spots that saved me from Melbourne’s unpredictable rain. Check-in was quick and friendly; the staff (shoutout to Sarah, I think her name was) handed over the keycard with a casual chat about the best local kebab joint down the road – Al Alamy, if you’re into that smoky Lebanese vibe. My suite? Spacious, like a proper one-bedroom apartment, with a kitchenette that actually had decent cookware – none of that flimsy stuff you find in budget spots. The bed was plush, sheets crisp and fresh-smelling, and there’s this little balcony overlooking a quiet side street, perfect for sipping coffee while watching the neighborhood wake up.
What really won me over, though, was how it felt like a home base without the usual hotel stiffness. I stayed for a week last spring, right when the jacarandas are blooming along Merri Creek nearby – take a walk there if you can, it’s a hidden gem for a bit of nature in the suburbs. The apartments are serviced, so they come in every few days to tidy up, but you can cook your own meals, which saved me a ton compared to eating out in the CBD. Amenities-wise, there’s a small gym that’s surprisingly well-equipped (treadmills that don’t rattle like they’re about to fall apart), and the Wi-Fi was rock-solid for remote work – no buffering during Zoom calls, which is a miracle in some Aussie spots. Noise levels? Well, during peak hours, you might hear the faint ding of the tram from Route 19 heading south, but the double-glazed windows block most of it out. I mean, it’s not dead silent like some rural retreat, but for a 4-star on a main drag, it’s impressively peaceful at night. Oh, and the laundry facilities on-site were a lifesaver – no trekking to a dodgy laundromat in Coburg or anything.
Look, if you’re planning a Melbourne trip and want to skip the tourist crush in the city while still being close enough – hop on that tram and you’re in Brunswick’s funky cafes in 10 minutes – this place is a smart pick. It’s got that high 9.5 rating for a reason: value for money, especially for families or longer stays, with suites that feel lived-in rather than sterile. Sure, the decor’s a tad generic (think neutral tones and IKEA-ish furniture), but that’s a minor nitpick when everything else clicks. I’d go back in a heartbeat, particularly in the quieter off-season like autumn, when Fawkner’s got that laid-back suburban charm without the summer crowds. If you’re driving, just watch for the speed cameras along Sydney Road – locals know to ease off the pedal there.
