Hotel Description
You know, the first time I rolled up to Flinders Street 238 – that’s Clements House right smack in the heart of Federation Square – I was dodging a swarm of tourists snapping pics of that iconic Flinders Street Station clock tower across the road. It’s one of those spots in Melbourne where the city’s pulse hits you right away: the clang of trams rattling by every few minutes, the faint whiff of coffee from the laneway cafes spilling out onto the pavement, and that constant hum of people milling about. Honestly, if you’re the type who thrives on urban energy, this place is gold – but fair warning, if you’re after dead quiet, well, earplugs might be your friend at night, especially during those big events like the Australian Open or the Melbourne Fringe Festival when Fed Square turns into a total zoo. I checked in around dusk once, and the staff were super laid-back, chatting about the best spots for a quick bite (pro tip: head down Hosier Lane for some killer street art and graffiti vibes, it’s literally a five-minute stroll).
What really sets Clements House apart, though – and I mean this after crashing there a couple of times – is how it blends that old-school Melbourne charm with just enough modern perks to make you feel pampered without going over the top. The building itself has this heritage feel, sort of like stepping into a renovated warehouse with exposed brick and high ceilings that echo a bit when you wheel your suitcase in (mind the slight creak on the floors, it’s part of the character). My room overlooked the Yarra River – or at least a sliver of it through the buildings – and waking up to the sound of seagulls and the distant whoosh of the river was a nice touch, especially after a day pounding the pavement. The beds are comfy, like sink-right-in level, and there’s a little kitchenette that saved me on lazy evenings when I didn’t want to brave the crowds at Degraves Street for dinner (though you should, those hidden espresso bars are legendary). Parking’s a bit of a hassle – it’s city center, so expect to hunt for a spot or pay up at one of the nearby garages on Russell Street – but once you’re settled, everything’s on foot: the NGV art gallery is basically next door, and you’re steps from the Southbank promenade for those riverside walks. Oh, and the Wi-Fi’s solid, which mattered when I was sorting out tram tickets to St Kilda Beach – no buffering frustrations there.
All in all, with its 8.8 rating and four-star setup, Clements House is that sweet spot for travelers who want to dive headfirst into Melbourne’s vibe without feeling like they’re in some sterile chain hotel. It’s not perfect – the elevators can get backed up during peak tourist seasons, say around summer when the square’s packed with markets and live music – but it feels authentic, you know? Like you’re actually living the city rather than just visiting. If you’re plotting a trip focused on culture, food, and that effortless Aussie cool, this is where I’d tell my mates to book – just pack light and embrace the buzz.

It is a value for money accommodation offering in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. Clean, and well presented, with some nice touches like the breakfast cereals and advice on nearest supermarkets etc
