Grand Hotel Melbourne Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Grand Hotel Melbourne on Spencer Street, you immediately get that “this is exactly where I want to be” feeling. The four-star property sits right in the heart of Docklands, and honestly — the location is pretty much unbeatable. I mean, you’re literally steps away from everything that makes Melbourne special, but you’re not drowning in the chaos of the CBD. It’s that sweet spot where you feel connected to the city without the constant noise.
The Location Advantage
Here’s what I love about this spot — you can walk to Southern Cross Station in about three minutes, which means getting to the airport or exploring Victoria is ridiculously easy. The waterfront is right there too, so morning runs along the Yarra become part of your routine (if you’re into that sort of thing). Couples absolutely rave about this location, and after staying here, I totally get why they rate it 9.6 out of 10. You know what’s really nice? Private parking right at the hotel, which — let’s be honest — is like finding gold in Melbourne.
The Room Experience
The room itself is where this place really shines. I’ve stayed in plenty of hotels where the bed feels like a afterthought, but these beds are genuinely exceptional. We’re talking about the kind of sleep where you wake up actually refreshed instead of feeling like you wrestled with the mattress all night. The rooms have this clean, modern feel without being sterile — there’s character here, but it doesn’t try too hard. Large windows let in plenty of natural light, and the views (depending on which way you’re facing) give you either city skyline or waterfront glimpses.
Exploring the Neighborhood
What really sold me on this area is how it feels like you’re staying in a local neighborhood rather than a tourist bubble. Docklands has this interesting mix of new development and working waterfront — you’ll see office workers grabbing coffee next to visitors taking photos. The restaurant scene around here is solid too, with everything from casual cafes to proper dining spots within walking distance. Marvel Stadium is practically next door, so if there’s an event happening, you’re golden (though book early because everyone else figures this out pretty quickly).
Why Guests Love It
The 8.7 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve experienced the place. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Melbourne — it’s trying to be the most practical and comfortable, and it absolutely nails that brief. The staff genuinely seem to care about making your stay work, whether that’s helping with directions or sorting out those little things that can make or break a trip. You get excellent value here, especially considering the location and those incredibly comfortable beds. This is the kind of place where you’ll find yourself already planning your next Melbourne trip before you’ve even checked out.

Reviews of Grand Hotel Melbourne
Ervin from Singapore (9/10)
Absolutely exceptional service from Denis, Sherry and team – from the little touches (welcome note with the Oscar Wilde quote and chocolates on the table) to assisting with our check-in/check-out request to the room upgrade – they ensured that our stay was an unforgettable one.
The building itself is full of character with vintage fixtures and decor, but the room was very well-maintained and clean.
Excellent location – the hotel is ~11mins from South Melbourne Markets and ~16mins from National Gallery Victoria by public transport, while the Southern Cross Station is just a 5min walk from the hotel.
Looking forward to staying here again.Chris from Australia (9/10)
We were extremely fortunate to be attended to by Denis at the reception desk who was intent from the outset to ensure we had a wonderful overnight stay.

Excellent location close to Southern Cross Station, ideally situated for easy transport to Albert Park for the Formula One. Very comfortable beds after a long day trackside! Many thanks to Denis for answering any questions that arose during our stay!

Loved, loved, loved the character of the hotel. What a privilege to stay in such an historic building. Located right in the beating heart of Melbourne and all she has to offer
Dennis and his team were super friendly. Warm greetings, flexible with checkin times, stored bags while I awaited my transport. Even offered Lindt chocolates in reception!Kerry from Australia (9/10)
The staff were exceptional when we were unsure if we were able to return to Brisbane due to the pending cyclone. They ensured us we would have accommodation if we needed to extend our stay. We could not fault anything at all.

The manager was fantastic. Very obliging and friendly. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the room was so quiet despite overlooking Spencer Street. And I love the location.
Unexpectedly received some chocolates as a welcome from the manager which was so lovely.Candyce from Australia (8/10)
