Grand Hotel Melbourne Overview
I remember pulling up to the Grand Hotel Melbourne on Spencer Street – you know, that bustling stretch in Docklands where the trams rattle by every few minutes and the Yarra River’s just a stone’s throw away. It was one of those crisp Melbourne mornings, the kind where the wind off the water hits you right in the face, and honestly, I was knackered from the flight. But stepping into the lobby? It sort of resets you – all sleek marble floors that echo a bit under your shoes, and this faint coffee aroma from the cafe tucked in the corner. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were these friendly locals who chatted about the best spots for brekkie nearby, like that little joint on Collins Street if you’re after a proper flat white. Oh, and parking – well, they have an underground spot, but it fills up quick during footy season when everyone’s heading to Marvel Stadium across the way. I mean, if you’re driving in, book it ahead or you’ll be circling like I did once.
What really stuck with me about the Grand is how it nails that balance between city buzz and a decent night’s sleep. My room on the higher floors had these floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the harbor – you wake up to the sun glinting off the boats, and at night, the city lights make it feel alive without being overwhelming. The beds are plush, like sinking into a cloud after a day wandering Federation Square or catching a show at the arts center (it’s only a quick tram ride down Bourke Street, by the way). Breakfast buffet’s solid – fresh pastries and those smashed avo toasts that Aussies do so well – but if I’m being honest, the portions could be a tad bigger for the price. There’s a gym that’s actually usable, not some afterthought with dusty weights, and the Wi-Fi held up even during peak hours, which is a godsend if you’re working remotely like I was. Noise-wise, Spencer Street traffic hums a bit in the evenings, especially with the bridge nearby, but the double-glazed windows muffle it pretty well – though if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room facing the back. And during summer, when the area’s packed with tourists hitting up South Wharf for markets, it gets lively, but the hotel’s got this quiet rooftop bar where you can escape with a cold one and watch the sunset.
All in all, for a 4-star spot with an 8.7 rating that feels earned, the Grand Hotel Melbourne is one I’d recommend without hesitation – especially if you’re mixing business with a bit of exploring. It’s not flashy or over-the-top, but it’s got that authentic Melbourne vibe, close enough to the CBD that you can walk to Queen Vic Market for fresh produce on weekends, yet tucked away from the worst of the crowds. Sure, the elevators can be slow during check-out rushes, but that’s minor compared to how it makes you feel at home in a city that can be a whirlwind. If you’re heading Down Under, give it a go – you’ll thank me when you’re sipping that morning coffee with a view that beats any postcard.

Reviews of Grand Hotel Melbourne
Ervin from Singapore (9/10)
Absolutely exceptional service from Denis, Sherry and team – from the little touches (welcome note with the Oscar Wilde quote and chocolates on the table) to assisting with our check-in/check-out request to the room upgrade – they ensured that our stay was an unforgettable one.
The building itself is full of character with vintage fixtures and decor, but the room was very well-maintained and clean.
Excellent location – the hotel is ~11mins from South Melbourne Markets and ~16mins from National Gallery Victoria by public transport, while the Southern Cross Station is just a 5min walk from the hotel.
Looking forward to staying here again.Chris from Australia (9/10)
We were extremely fortunate to be attended to by Denis at the reception desk who was intent from the outset to ensure we had a wonderful overnight stay.

Excellent location close to Southern Cross Station, ideally situated for easy transport to Albert Park for the Formula One. Very comfortable beds after a long day trackside! Many thanks to Denis for answering any questions that arose during our stay!

Loved, loved, loved the character of the hotel. What a privilege to stay in such an historic building. Located right in the beating heart of Melbourne and all she has to offer
Dennis and his team were super friendly. Warm greetings, flexible with checkin times, stored bags while I awaited my transport. Even offered Lindt chocolates in reception!Kerry from Australia (9/10)
The staff were exceptional when we were unsure if we were able to return to Brisbane due to the pending cyclone. They ensured us we would have accommodation if we needed to extend our stay. We could not fault anything at all.

The manager was fantastic. Very obliging and friendly. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the room was so quiet despite overlooking Spencer Street. And I love the location.
Unexpectedly received some chocolates as a welcome from the manager which was so lovely.Candyce from Australia (8/10)
