Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to the Grand Hyatt Melbourne on Collins Street – you know, that iconic stretch right in the heart of the CBD where the trams rattle by every few minutes and the air smells like fresh coffee from those hole-in-the-wall cafes nearby. It’s at 123 Collins, smack in the middle of everything, so if you’re like me and hate wasting time on commutes, this place is a godsend. I mean, I stepped out of the lobby and was wandering Federation Square or grabbing dumplings in Chinatown within five minutes – no Uber needed. Check-in was a breeze, even though I arrived during that afternoon rush when business folks flood the area; the staff had this warm, efficient vibe, chatting about the best spots for a flat white while handing over my key. Honestly, the lobby itself is this grand, airy space with high ceilings and that subtle hum of city energy filtering in – not overwhelming, but enough to remind you you’re in Melbourne, where the vibe shifts from bustling days to those chill evenings along the Yarra.

What really stuck with me were the rooms – I had one on a higher floor with views over the skyline, and let me tell you, waking up to the sun glinting off the Eureka Tower beats any alarm clock. The beds are ridiculously comfortable, like sinking into a cloud after a day of exploring, though fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, you might catch some faint street noise from below, especially on weekends when the bars on Flinders Lane get lively. But hey, that’s city living for you. The bathroom was a highlight – massive rain shower, fluffy robes, and those little touches like heated floors that make you feel pampered without trying too hard. I spent an afternoon at their spa, Ru-Co, getting a massage that melted away the jet lag from my flight in; it’s tucked away quietly, away from the main buzz. Food-wise, Collins Kitchen does this killer buffet breakfast with fresh pastries and avo on toast that rivals any trendy brunch spot in Fitzroy – and don’t skip their high tea if you’re into that sort of thing. Oh, and parking? They have valet, which is a lifesaver in the CBD where spots are like gold dust, though it adds a bit to the bill.

All in all, if you’re splurging on a 5-star stay in Melbourne – and with its 8.7 rating, it’s earned it – the Grand Hyatt feels like that reliable friend who knows the city inside out. It’s not perfect; during peak season like summer festivals, the place can feel a tad crowded in the evenings. But for business trips or a romantic getaway, where you want luxury without the stuffiness, this is it. I left feeling recharged, already planning my next visit – maybe during the quieter winter months when the rates dip and you can snag a room with that epic view. Trust me, it’s the kind of spot that makes Melbourne’s magic even more accessible.

Location was excellent. Right in the middle of a major entertainment, dining and shopping district. Staff was amazing. Facilities were excellent. Breakfast was the best I have ever had in any luxury hotel around the world. A must stay if you are in Melbourne.

Breakfast is as good as any hotel in the world.
The gym and sauna are outstanding – although I miss the cold plunge pool!

I last stayed in this hotel over 20 years ago. I am pleased to report that it is as good as ever. The staff are all very helpful. James runs the Club lounge like the true professional that he is. The sheets and towels are all excellent quality. The location of the hotel is wonderful right in the heart of everything. The views from the upper floors are fantastic. A great venue.

  • Rebekah from Australia (9/10)

Room was very spacious, upgraded to the next level and had an exceptional view from our room. The bath room was not the best configuration so the toilet was a little difficult to use

  • Robyn from New Zealand (9/10)

I was on the 19th floor overlooking the river. It was a beautiful view, the room was quiet, and it was within walking distance of everything I like to see on a visit to Melbourne.

  • Cameron from Australia (9/10)

Big deep bath was great to relax in.
