Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to the Hidden Gem on Morotai Parade in Heidelberg West – you know, that quiet little stretch in Melbourne’s northeast suburbs, not too far from the Darebin Creek trails where locals go for those early morning walks. It’s not your flashy downtown spot; honestly, it’s more like stumbling upon a comfy townhouse that feels like it belongs to a friend who’s out of town. I mean, Heidelberg West isn’t the first place tourists think of – it’s got that suburban vibe, with easy access to Bell Street if you’re heading into the city or over to La Trobe Uni for whatever reason. But that’s what makes it a hidden gem, right? No crowds, just residential streets lined with gum trees that drop those familiar eucalyptus scents, especially after a light rain. Parking was a breeze – plenty of spots right out front, no fighting for meters like in the CBD – and check-in was this straightforward self-service thing with a lockbox code they email you. I arrived around dusk, and the place was already lit up warmly, no fuss, no front desk drama.
Stepping inside, it’s a proper three-bedroom townhouse, spread out over two levels, and yeah, it’s got that lived-in charm without feeling worn out. The living room’s got these plush couches that you sink into after a day exploring – I spent an evening there with a cuppa, listening to the faint hum of distant traffic from the Northern Ring Road, but nothing that kept me up at night. The bedrooms are spacious, with queen beds that actually have decent mattresses (you know how some places skimp on that?), and fresh linens that smelled like they’d just come off the line. There’s a full kitchen – well, sort of dated with those laminate counters, but stocked with basics like a coffee maker and a dishwasher that worked fine for whipping up brekkie. Oh, and the backyard patio – small but sweet, with a BBQ setup perfect for summer evenings when the weather’s behaving. I appreciated the little touches, like extra blankets in the closet for Melbourne’s unpredictable chills, and the Wi-Fi was surprisingly zippy for streaming. Noise-wise, it’s peaceful; maybe the occasional dog bark from neighbors, but that’s suburbia for you. If you’re traveling with family or a group, this setup beats cramped hotel rooms – we fit five of us comfortably, and it felt homey, not sterile.
Look, if you’re after a base that’s authentic Melbourne without the tourist trap prices, this place is worth it – rated an 8.3 for good reason, I’d say. It’s about a 20-minute drive to the city center, or you can hop on the 86 tram from nearby Reservoir for that local commute feel. Sure, it’s not luxury – no spa or concierge – but for families or longer stays, it delivers that relaxed escape. I left thinking, yeah, I’d book it again in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the nearby parks are blooming. Just pack light; the stairs might be a minor hassle with heavy bags.

It was walking distance to my family. It's certainly big enough for 5 people .
What could be improved: Only a few shops in walking distance, need a vehicle if you need to go to a bigger shopping area, need to catch a bus if you need to get to a train stationSpacious property that is in a great location. Perfect for a traveling family. – Megan from Australia – 18 May 2025 (9/10)
Surprisingly spacious.
Lots of space and super comfy beds – Kate from Australia – 12 January 2025 (8/10)
We were a family of six staying over the Christmas period and the house was huge! All the bedrooms are upstairs and have excellent quality beds and linens. There are blockout blinds and it was a quiet neighbourhood so we slept well. We had a few issues with some missing amenities but the host was really quick to help us out. The kitchen is big and there are multiple living rooms downstairs. It really suited us.
What could be improved: The kitchen could do with a deep clean (the rest of the house was spotless) and a few basics like salt, pepper and oil would have helped.Enjoyed staying in this property. – Chelliah from Australia – 16 November 2024 (8/10)
The house is clean and well-maintained. The host's instructions are excellent, and the beds are clean and comfortable.
What could be improved: There is no shampoo or body wash provided.Good – Brendan from Australia – 13 October 2024 (7/10)
The host was friendly and communicated effectively. Nice large dwelling with alternate rooms for gathering together or being more intimate. was quiet and close to shops.
What could be improved: NilVery good – Nicole from Australia – 26 September 2024 (8/10)
Hosts were very accommodating for our late booking and even met us to hand over keys.
Great layout for family, with plenty of room
Location suited us well
Loved having a laundry to do washing, as we were there for a sports carnival!
Heating was great
What could be improved: Cooktop didn't light with ignition and no lighter supplied. Oven didn't seem safe to use
No tea towles to dry dishesGreat value for an overnight stay. – Kerrie-ann from Australia – 6 October 2024 (10/10)
Plenty of space, modern interior. Large rooms.
What could be improved: The main lounge TV would be better upgraded to a modern smart TV to allow access to streaming services. The third bedroom was supposed to have a double and single bed but had 2 ‘king singles’. Please include the property number in the address for easier locatingI really enjoyed my stay ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Kimuge from Australia – 26 September 2024 (10/10)
The house is soo clean and spacious. Bedrooms really tidy, I loved the color blend in every room very good choice of quilt covers and sheets. I loved the fabrics.
I would recommend anyone to this property always and I will definitely come back again.spacious – Jodie from Australia – 22 April 2025 (6/10)
What could be improved: Even though this is a very good size, there was a couple of things which need considering.
There was no soap holder in shower. The fixtures around lights etc need cleaning. The kettle needs cleaning out. And when we first arrived we thought we were at the wrong place as the lawn was long & weeds covering the stones. The table outside was filthy. The Tv definately needs to be updated. especially for this day & age, alot of people just like to sit back & relax with a good movie, even tho it had free wifi . we had great difficulty connecting our phones.
