Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon the High-Rise City 1 Bed 2 Bath Retreat on Collins Street during a quick business trip to Melbourne last winter – honestly, it was one of those spots that looks a bit unassuming from the street, tucked into that bustling stretch right near Southern Cross Station. I mean, Collins is always alive with trams rattling by and office workers grabbing flat whites from those little laneway cafes like Hardware Lane just a block over, but stepping into the lobby felt like a welcome breather from the CBD chaos. Check-in was straightforward, no fuss – the staff were friendly enough, though I had to wait a few minutes because some group was sorting out their luggage (typical for a Friday afternoon when everyone’s flooding in from the airport via the SkyBus that stops practically at the door). The building’s a modern high-rise, so the elevator ride up gave me that quick glimpse of the city lights starting to flicker on – and yeah, parking’s a nightmare if you’re driving; better to ditch the car at one of those underground lots on Little Collins and walk the five minutes over.
What really sold me on this place was the apartment itself – it’s set up like a proper one-bedder with two baths, which is a godsend if you’re traveling with a mate or just need space to spread out after a day dodging tourists on Bourke Street Mall. The living area had this comfy sectional sofa that smelled faintly of fresh linen (they must air it out well), and the kitchenette was stocked with basics – think a Nespresso machine and a decent fridge for stashing those market finds from Queen Vic, which is an easy tram ride away. I loved the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Yarra River direction; mornings were all about that soft glow filtering in, though the traffic hum from below could get a bit much during peak hours – earplugs helped, or just crank up the air con for white noise. It’s not flawless, mind you; the Wi-Fi dipped out once or twice (annoying for Zoom calls), and the second bathroom felt a tad cramped, like they squeezed it in as an afterthought. But for a 4-star spot with a solid 7 rating, it punches above its weight – especially in summer when the city’s heaving with events like the Australian Open, and you can stroll to the stadium in under 20 minutes without dealing with packed trains.
All in all, if you’re after a no-nonsense retreat smack in Melbourne’s heart – close enough to pop over to Federation Square for street art or grab dumplings in Chinatown on Little Bourke – this one’s a smart pick. It’s not the ritzy end of town like some spots on Southbank, but it feels authentic, you know? Quiet evenings on the balcony with a glass of local pinot, watching the ferries chug along the river – that’s the kind of simple magic that makes you want to extend your stay. Just book ahead during footy season; it fills up fast with interstate fans hitting up the MCG.

Reviews
Week stay – Deb from Australia – 14 June 2025 (7/10)
Position was great, close walk to Southern Cross & tram out the front. Great view. Had most the basics there that I needed.
What could be improved: Bed was very soft, so for me that wasn't good. Just some minor things that could be improved that I let owner know directly.
