Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to 57 City Road in Southbank after a quick tram ride from Flinders Street Station – you know, that iconic spot with the clocks where everyone meets up. It’s right in the thick of things, but not overwhelmingly so; the building’s this modern high-rise that blends in with the shiny apartments along the Yarra River. Honestly, checking in was a breeze – no fuss at the lobby, just a friendly host who handed over the keys and pointed out the secure parking downstairs (which, let’s be real, is a lifesaver in Melbourne’s CBD fringe where spots vanish like magic during peak hours). Stepping into unit 2904 felt like, well, exactly what the name says: a home away from home. The place is more apartment than hotel room, with a full kitchenette stocked with basics – I whipped up a quick brekkie using eggs from the Woolies down on Clarendon Street, saving me from overpriced cafe runs.
What really sold me was the view from the balcony – you’re up on the 29th floor, gazing out over the river towards the city skyline, with the Eureka Tower poking up like a giant glass finger. Mornings were my favorite; the sun hits just right, and you can smell the fresh coffee wafting up from the promenade below, mixed with that crisp Melbourne air (though it gets a bit nippy in winter, so pack layers). The room itself is spotless, four-star comfy without being flashy – think soft, king-sized bed with those plump pillows that actually support your neck, and a bathroom with a rain shower that blasts away any jet lag. I mean, it’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times during evening Netflix binges, and if you’re sensitive to noise, you might hear the faint hum of City Road traffic below, especially around rush hour. But overall, it felt lived-in and practical – there’s even a washer-dryer combo, which came in handy after a muddy wander through the Botanic Gardens nearby. Southbank’s vibe is unbeatable too; I strolled over to Crown Casino for a cheeky dinner (their food court’s surprisingly good for quick Asian eats), or hit the NGV for some free art therapy – all within a 10-minute walk. And if you’re here during the Australian Open, it’s chaos in the best way, with pop-up bars along the river, but the building stays pretty quiet inside.
Look, if you’re after that authentic Melbourne experience without the sterile hotel chain feel, this spot nails it. At an 8.9 rating, it’s earned its stripes – I’ve stayed in fancier places, but none felt as genuinely welcoming. Sure, it might cost a bit more during events season, but for families or longer stays, it’s a smart pick. You’d be hard-pressed to find better value in Southbank, especially with that easy access to trams heading to St Kilda or the markets. I left feeling like I’d actually lived there a bit, you know?
