Horizon Haven in Southbank
You know, I stumbled upon Horizon Haven during a quick trip to Melbourne last spring, and honestly, it kind of surprised me how tucked away it feels on Clarke Street, right in the heart of Southbank.
You know, I stumbled upon Horizon Haven during a quick trip to Melbourne last spring, and honestly, it kind of surprised me how tucked away it feels on Clarke Street, right in the heart of Southbank. I mean, you’re just a stone’s throw from the Yarra River – like, literally a five-minute walk to the promenade where all those outdoor cafes buzz in the evenings – but the street itself is pretty quiet, especially after the dinner crowd thins out. I arrived around dusk after dodging the usual tram chaos on St Kilda Road, and the check-in was a breeze; the front desk folks were chatty without being over-the-top, even hooked me up with a map of the nearby laneways (pro tip: skip the tourist traps and head to Freshwater Place for some killer street food stalls that locals swear by). The building’s got that modern vibe with clean lines and big windows, but it’s not flashy – more like a solid, no-nonsense spot that blends right into the neighborhood. Parking’s a bit of a hassle if you’re driving in, though; spots are limited and pricey, so I ended up using the public garage down on Kavanagh Street, which isn’t too bad if you time it right before peak hours.
What really sold me on the place was the rooms – I had one on the higher floors with a view straight out over the city skyline, and let me tell you, waking up to that morning light filtering through the curtains, with the faint hum of the river ferries below, it’s the kind of thing that makes you linger over your coffee. The bed was plush, like sinking into a cloud after a day trekking around the Arts Centre or popping over to the NGV (which is super close – just cross the Princes Bridge and you’re there in under ten minutes). Amenities-wise, there’s a decent gym and a rooftop pool that’s heated year-round, which came in handy during that drizzly afternoon I spent lounging with a book; it’s not huge, but it’s clean and rarely crowded, especially mid-week. Breakfast in the on-site cafe was solid – think fresh avo on toast with a side of Melbourne’s famous coffee – though I wish they’d stock more gluten-free options, you know? The Wi-Fi’s reliable too, which mattered for me catching up on work emails. Oh, and noise levels? Southbank can get lively with the Crown Casino crowds spilling out late, but the rooms are well-insulated – I barely heard a thing, aside from the occasional tram bell in the distance.
All in all, if you’re hitting Melbourne for the vibes – maybe catching a show at the Malthouse Theatre or just wandering Federation Square – Horizon Haven’s a smart pick without breaking the bank. It’s got that 4-star polish with an 8.9 rating that feels earned, not hyped. Sure, it’s not perfect (the elevators can be slow during busy check-out times), but for the location alone, right smack in the action yet peaceful enough to recharge, I’d book it again in a heartbeat. Well, especially in summer when Southbank’s outdoor markets light up – trust me, you won’t want to miss that energy.

What Our Guests Say
The location is basically perfect. Especially for the price you pay. Hosts were very helpful and friendly. They had so many things you need in case you forgot to bring it - body wash, shampoo, even down to laundry power if you wanted to wash your clothes.
Location was fantastic for an event at the convention centre. Trams very close by which was good. Woolies underneath was very convenient. Apartment had everything we needed.
The location was great, two bedrooms and two bathrooms was also very handy. We also appreciated being able to have a parking space.
