IMSA Group
I remember pulling up to the IMSA Group on City Road in Southbank – you know, that stretch right by the Yarra River where the trams rattle past every few minutes and the air smells like a mix of fresh coffee from those pop-up stalls and the faint tang of the water.
I remember pulling up to the IMSA Group on City Road in Southbank – you know, that stretch right by the Yarra River where the trams rattle past every few minutes and the air smells like a mix of fresh coffee from those pop-up stalls and the faint tang of the water. It’s smack in the middle of things, honestly, just a short walk over the pedestrian bridge to Flinders Street Station or down to the Crown Casino if you’re feeling lucky. I mean, I stayed there last spring during the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, and it was perfect for dodging in and out of events without dealing with the CBD parking nightmare – though fair warning, if you’re driving, the on-site spots fill up fast after 5 PM, especially on weekends when everyone’s heading to the Southbank Promenade for dinner. The check-in was straightforward, no fuss; the staff were friendly enough, chatting about the best spots for brekkie nearby, like that hidden gem cafe on Kavanagh Street with killer smashed avo.
What really stuck with me about the place – it’s a solid 4-star setup, but not the flashy kind, more like a reliable home base with apartments that feel lived-in rather than sterile. My room had this massive window overlooking the city skyline, and at night, with the lights twinkling and the occasional hum of traffic below (it’s not super quiet, mind you, especially if you’re on a lower floor facing the road), it sort of lulled me to sleep. The kitchenette was a lifesaver – I whipped up a quick pasta one evening after a long day exploring the NGV (that’s the National Gallery of Victoria, just a 10-minute stroll away), and the beds were comfy, though the pillows could use a fluff-up; they were a bit flat, if I’m being honest. There’s a pool on the rooftop that catches the afternoon sun beautifully in summer, but it gets crowded during peak season – think January when everyone’s escaping the heat. Oh, and the Wi-Fi? Spotty in the evenings, but fine for streaming if you’re not too picky. Little touches like the fresh towels that smelled faintly of eucalyptus made it feel authentically Aussie, you know?
All in all, if you’re after a no-nonsense spot in Southbank without breaking the bank – we’re talking rates that won’t sting for what you get – I’d say go for it, especially if you’re into that urban vibe with easy access to the arts precinct or even a quick tram ride to St Kilda Beach. It’s not perfect; the decor’s a tad dated in spots, and breakfast options are basic (grab something from the markets instead), but for a 7.3 rating, it punches above its weight for value. I left feeling like I’d gotten a real slice of Melbourne life – bustling yet chill – and I’d book again for a mates’ trip or solo adventure. Just time it right; avoid the Grand Prix weekend unless you love the roar of engines from your balcony.
