Inspiration Station – An Iconic Designer Pad
I remember pulling up to Inspiration Station on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, one of those days where the sky can't make up its mind, and the trams are clanging down Collins Street like they're in a hurry to nowhere.
I remember pulling up to Inspiration Station on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, one of those days where the sky can’t make up its mind, and the trams are clanging down Collins Street like they’re in a hurry to nowhere. The address is right in the heart of postcode 3000, smack in the middle of the CBD, just a stone’s throw from Flinders Lane with all its hidden cafes and street art. Honestly, finding parking was a bit of a nightmare – typical inner-city hassle, so if you’re driving, I’d stash the car at one of those multi-level spots on Little Collins and walk the block. But once I stepped inside, it was like entering this quirky design bubble that sort of shields you from the urban chaos outside. The lobby’s got this eclectic vibe, with mismatched vintage chairs and exposed brick walls that smell faintly of fresh coffee from the in-house espresso machine – nothing fancy, but it hits the spot after a long flight. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were these laid-back locals who chatted about the best nearby spots for brekkie, like that little joint on Degraves Street where the flat whites are legendary.
What really sets this place apart, though – and I mean, I’ve stayed in a few designer pads around Melbourne – is how it feels like someone’s cool apartment rather than a sterile hotel. It’s a 4-star spot with a solid 9.2 rating, and you can see why: the rooms are these compact, creatively styled havens with bold wallpapers and funky light fixtures that make you want to snap photos for your Insta (guilty as charged). Mine overlooked the laneways, so there was this constant hum of city life – people laughing below, the occasional whiff of dumplings from Chinatown drifting up – but it wasn’t overwhelming, especially since the windows are double-glazed to keep out the tram noise. Amenities-wise, there’s a communal kitchen area that’s great for whipping up a quick meal if you’re tired of eating out, and the Wi-Fi is surprisingly zippy for streaming those late-night shows. Well, one minor gripe: the bathrooms are on the snug side, sort of like those tiny European ones, but they’re spotless and stocked with eco-friendly toiletries that actually smell amazing, like eucalyptus and lemon myrtle – very Aussie. And timing matters here; book during the shoulder seasons like spring or autumn to avoid the summer tourist crush around Federation Square, when the place gets busier and rates spike.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants more than just a bed in Melbourne’s buzzing core – maybe you’re here for the arts scene or just wandering Southbank along the Yarra – Inspiration Station is that iconic pad that sticks with you. It’s not perfect, but it’s got personality in spades, and waking up to the city’s energy without feeling swallowed by it? That’s worth it. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially for those quiet evenings on the rooftop terrace, sipping a local craft beer while the sun sets over the skyline. You know what, pack light and embrace the vibe – you’ll thank me later.

What Our Guests Say
The location was amazing, so close to great restaurants and trams, Flinders Station. Sound proofing was great, very quiet for such a busy location. Everything you need was provided in the apartment. The bonus was the view of Flinders Station bathed in Christmas lighting just outside the big arched windows. Loved it!
The location is perfect, amongst the cafes and restaurants of degraves street, close to transport and the centre of the city. The apartment is lovely with super high ceilings, comfortable beds and furniture. Everything you need is there and you can walk straight out your door into the atmosphere of Melbourne.
