Hotel Description
I stumbled upon Kavanagh Cool during a quick getaway to Melbourne last spring—honestly, I was just looking for something central without the hassle of those sterile chain hotels, and this place popped up on my radar. It’s tucked right in Southbank, you know, that buzzing strip along the Yarra where the promenade lights up at night with joggers and street performers. I drove in from the airport via Citylink, and parking was a breeze—there’s an underground spot that costs about 30 bucks a day, but if you’re smart, you snag a street meter on Kavanagh Street itself for cheaper, especially after 6 PM when things quiet down. Check-in was smooth; the front desk folks were these laid-back Aussies who handed over my keycard with a chat about the best nearby brekkie spots—turns out, there’s a hidden gem called Higher Ground just a 10-minute walk toward the arts precinct. My first whiff of the lobby hit me with that fresh eucalyptus vibe they pump in (or maybe it’s just the plants everywhere), and it felt like stepping into a resort oasis smack in the city—pools on the rooftop with killer views of the skyline, and these cushy loungers that make you forget you’re not in Bali.
What really sold me on Kavanagh Cool, though, was how it nails that resort-style living without feeling pretentious—it’s more like a swanky apartment block with hotel perks. My room was on the higher floors (ask for one facing the river if you can; the lower ones pick up a bit of tram noise from Queensbridge Street, especially during peak hours around 8 AM). The bed was massive, with those crisp white sheets that smell like they’ve been line-dried in the sun, and the kitchenette came stocked with decent coffee pods—saved me a fortune on room service. I mean, well, the WiFi dipped a tad during evenings when everyone’s streaming, but nothing a quick reset couldn’t fix. Mornings, I’d hit the gym downstairs—it’s got that rubber-mat smell and free weights that actually feel new—and then wander out to the Southbank boardwalk for a flat white. You know what surprised me? How easy it is to hop on the 109 tram right outside to zip over to Federation Square or even the Queen Vic Market for fresh produce on weekends. And if you’re into nightlife, Crown Casino’s literally a stone’s throw away—great for a punt or just people-watching, but fair warning, it gets rowdy on Friday nights with the after-work crowd spilling over.
All in all, if you’re hitting Melbourne for a mix of chill vibes and city action—say, catching a show at the Arts Centre or exploring the laneways—Kavanagh Cool is a solid pick. It’s not flawless; the pool area can get crowded in summer (think December through February when everyone’s escaping the heat), and breakfast isn’t included unless you book a package, but for a 4-star spot with an 8.7 rating, it punches above its weight. I left feeling like I’d found my go-to pad for future trips—honestly, next time I’m bringing friends and turning it into a base for Yarra Valley day trips. If that sounds like your jam, book it; you won’t regret the resort feels in the heart of Southbank.

It was not clean, when we got there. We ended up cleaning it ourselves, taking time away from our holiday! It also had no instruction book or ideas for what to do, or where to go. Nothing. I had to log into the properties website, that was given to me by the person who was renting out the property. I didn’t even know what to do with the trash, even after asking, with no response. It was pretty bad.
