Lovely Victorian Terrace – Entire home
I remember pulling up to 30 Arnold Street in Princes Hill on a crisp Melbourne morning – you know, one of those days where the air smells faintly of eucalyptus from nearby Royal Park, and the trams are rumbling faintly in the distance.
I remember pulling up to 30 Arnold Street in Princes Hill on a crisp Melbourne morning – you know, one of those days where the air smells faintly of eucalyptus from nearby Royal Park, and the trams are rumbling faintly in the distance. Princes Hill isn’t exactly the touristy heart of the city like Fitzroy or the CBD, but honestly, that’s what makes it so appealing if you’re after a slice of real Melbourne life. This Lovely Victorian Terrace – it’s the whole home, mind you, not just a room – sits on a quiet, tree-lined street where locals walk their dogs and chat over fences. I mean, it’s just a short stroll from Lygon Street in Carlton, where you can grab some of the best pasta outside Italy (try D.O.C. for their margherita pizza; it’s a game-changer). Parking was a breeze – there’s usually spots right out front, though it can get a bit tight on weekends when everyone’s heading to the markets. Check-in was super straightforward with a key lockbox; no fuss, no waiting around, which is a godsend after a long flight.
Stepping inside, well, it’s like walking into a hug from the past – those high ceilings and original cornices scream Victorian charm, but they’ve updated it just enough with modern touches that don’t feel out of place. The living room has these big sash windows that let in heaps of natural light, and I spent a lazy afternoon curled up on the velvet sofa with a book, listening to the distant hum of the city without it intruding (it’s surprisingly quiet here, even during peak hour on nearby Rathdowne Street). The kitchen’s fully stocked – think fresh herbs in the little backyard garden, which smells amazing after a rain – and whipping up brekkie was a treat, especially with coffee from the local roastery just around the corner on Pigdon Street. There are three bedrooms, all comfy with plush linens that actually feel like home, though fair warning, the stairs are a bit creaky and steep if you’ve got mobility issues or heavy bags. Oh, and the bathroom’s got that clawfoot tub – soaking in it after exploring the Melbourne Zoo (only a 10-minute walk away) was pure bliss, with the faint scent of lavender from the provided soaps. It’s not massive, but for a family or small group, it’s spot on, and during the quieter winter months, you might even score it at a steal.
Look, if you’re the type who wants to ditch the sterile hotel vibe and actually live like a local, this place is a gem – that 9.8 rating isn’t hype; it’s earned. I’ve stayed in fancier spots downtown, but nothing beats waking up here, grabbing a flat white from a nearby cafe, and wandering through Princes Park for a jog. Sure, it’s a tad further from the main action (about 15 minutes by tram to the city center), but that’s the trade-off for peace and authenticity. You’d be hard-pressed to find better value in this part of town, especially if you’re visiting during the Australian Open in summer – book early, though, as it fills up fast. All in all, it left me wishing I could extend my stay; it’s the kind of spot that makes you fall a little more in love with Melbourne.
Hotels near me in Melbourne deliver effortless tram hops to theatres, sports arenas, and Southbank cultural hubs.

What Our Guests Say
The house is on a quiet street, but walking distance to plenty of great shops/restaurants and bars. The house was perfect for 3 of us, well considered, lovely bathroom, great kitchen, and lovely rear garden. It was a real respite after a day out and about, and we loved coming home to it in the evening. We didnt meet Mary, but she texted various details, and it all went really well. I would book it again next time I am back in Melbourne. Thank you Mary !

Well appointed in a good location. Host very helpful.
I loved the spacious apartment-house, the graden with its surprises (fresh mint, strawberries, lemons)! Everything that you can think of is there in terms of kitchen stuff and else. The location was super: lot's of greenery, quiet, really good access by tram to the city. The host was very afriendly and helpful!
Lovely courtyard out the back. Coffee was good.
