Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to 74 Nott Street in Port Melbourne – you know, that quiet little pocket just off Bay Street where the houses have that old-school Melbourne charm mixed with modern renos. It’s not right on the beach like some spots claim, but honestly, it’s a legit five-minute stroll to the sand at Port Melbourne Beach, past those cute federation-style homes and the occasional coffee cart that pops up on weekends. I mean, we arrived around lunchtime on a sunny Saturday, and parking was a bit of a juggle – Nott Street’s narrow and residential, so you might have to circle for a spot if it’s peak season, like during the Australian Open when everyone’s flooding in from the city. But once we got in, the check-in was a breeze; it’s one of those self-contained townhouses with a key code entry, no fussing with a front desk, which was perfect after the drive from the airport. The place smells like fresh linen and a hint of eucalyptus – probably from the cleaning products they use – and stepping inside, you feel that immediate shift from the bustle of nearby Graham Street traffic to this cozy, upscale hideaway.
What really sold me on this luxury beachside townhouse – and yeah, it’s got that 4-star vibe without trying too hard – was the private rooftop terrace. We spent evenings up there with a bottle of local Yarra Valley wine, watching the sun dip behind the Spirit of Tasmania ferry as it pulls out from Station Pier, just a stone’s throw away. The terrace is decked out with comfy loungers and a little grill setup, and on clear nights, you can hear the distant waves crashing mixed with the hum of the city – sort of peaceful, but not dead quiet, you know? Inside, the rooms are spacious for a townhouse; we had two bedrooms with those plush king beds that make you sink in, and the kitchen’s fully stocked – think high-end appliances and even a Nespresso machine, which saved us from overpriced cafe runs. There’s a minor thing, though: the bathroom on the ground floor could use better ventilation after a steamy shower, especially in Melbourne’s humid summers, but it’s nothing a quick window crack doesn’t fix. We walked everywhere – to the fish and chips joints on Bay Street or even hopped the tram into the CBD for a day trip – and coming back to that terrace felt like our own private oasis, away from the tourist crowds at St Kilda.
Look, if you’re after a spot that’s more “lived-in luxury” than a sterile hotel chain, this place nails it with a perfect 10 rating for a reason. It’s ideal for couples or small families who want to blend into Port Melbourne life – grab brekkie at one of the hidden gems like the cafe on Rouse Street, or just lounge on the beach without the hassle of driving. We stayed in winter, when it’s quieter and the rooftop’s windier but still magical with those bay views, and I’d go back in a heartbeat. Sure, it’s not the cheapest, but for the walkability, the privacy, and those little touches like fresh towels waiting on arrival – well, it makes you feel like you’ve scored a local’s secret. If Melbourne’s on your list, skip the high-rises and book this; you’ll thank me when you’re sipping coffee up top, watching the world go by.
