Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to the Mainpoint 25th in Southbank one drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, that part of town right across the Yarra from the CBD, where the high-rises shoot up like they’re competing with the Eureka Tower. Honestly, it’s got this sleek, modern vibe from the outside, all glass and steel reflecting the river, but stepping into the lobby felt more welcoming than I expected. There was this faint scent of fresh coffee from the little cafe nook – not overpowering, just enough to make you think, “Okay, this could be home for a few days.” Check-in was a breeze, even though I arrived right in the middle of peak hour when everyone’s scrambling back from work; the staff were chatty Aussies who tossed in tips about dodging the tourist crowds on Queensbridge Street. My room was up on one of the higher floors – we’re talking sky-high, with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the city skyline like a postcard. You can spot the lights of Crown Casino twinkling at night, and if you’re lucky, catch the fireballs they shoot off on weekends. It’s not perfect, though – the elevators can get a bit jammed during breakfast rush, especially in summer when the tourists flood in for the Australian Open.
What really sold me on this place was how central it feels without being overwhelming. Southbank’s got that buzz, you know? You’re a quick stroll over the pedestrian bridge to Flinders Street Station – I mean, five minutes tops if you’re not stopping for a flat white at one of those hole-in-the-wall spots along the promenade. And the pool? Oh man, it’s up on the 25th floor or something like that, with views that make you forget you’re swimming in a concrete jungle. I spent a lazy morning there, the water cool against the humid air, listening to the distant hum of trams below – it’s heated, which is a godsend in Melbourne’s fickle weather. The rooms are solid for a 4-star joint; mine had a comfy king bed that didn’t creak (a rarity in some city hotels), and the bathroom was spotless with those rain showerheads that actually deliver on pressure. Parking’s a bit of a hassle if you’re driving – it’s valet only and costs a pretty penny, but hey, with the tram stop right outside on Clarendon Street, who needs a car? Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly quiet for such a central spot; the double-glazed windows block out most of the late-night revelers from the bars along the river. Well, except maybe on Grand Final weekend – that’s when the whole city goes nuts.
All in all, if you’re after a place that’s got that elevated feel – literally and figuratively – without breaking the bank too much, Mainpoint 25th is a smart pick. It’s rated around 8.2 for good reason; not flawless, but reliable for couples wanting romantic views or business folks needing quick access to the convention center (it’s basically next door). I left feeling like I’d scored a hidden gem in Southbank – you know what, next time I’m in Melbourne, I’d book it again in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the rates dip and the pool’s less crowded. Just pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper during events.
