Marlin
You know, I stumbled upon the Marlin in Elwood kind of by accident last summer – I was driving down from the city center, dodging the usual traffic snarls on St Kilda Road, and suddenly there it was, tucked right on Ormond Esplanade with that unbeatable view of Port Phillip Bay.
It’s not one of those flashy high-rises; more like a cozy, low-key apartment-style spot that feels like it belongs in this laid-back suburb. Checking in was a breeze – the staff were these friendly locals who chatted about the best time to hit the beach path (early mornings before the joggers take over, apparently). I mean, parking’s a bit of a juggle on the esplanade, especially on weekends when everyone flocks to Elwood Beach just across the road, but they have a few spots out back that saved me from circling forever. Honestly, stepping into the lobby, you get hit with that fresh, salty sea air – none of that sterile hotel smell – and it’s got this relaxed vibe, like you’re crashing at a mate’s beach house rather than some corporate chain.
What really sold me on the place was how it nails that Melbourne coastal living without trying too hard. My room – a one-bedroom suite on the second floor – had these big windows that let in the sound of waves crashing at night, which was sort of meditative, you know? (Though fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, the occasional seagull symphony at dawn might test you.) The kitchenette was stocked with basics, so I whipped up brekkie with stuff from the little IGA down on Glen Huntly Road – it’s just a five-minute stroll, past those cute Victorian terraces that make Elwood feel so charming and under-the-radar compared to buzzy St Kilda nearby. We wandered over to Ripponlea Estate for a lazy afternoon (it’s only a short drive up Brighton Road), or grabbed fish and chips at that no-frills spot on Ormond Point. The hotel itself has a small pool out back that’s perfect for cooling off after a day exploring, and the Wi-Fi’s solid – I streamed a footy game without a hitch. Well, it’s not perfect; the decor’s a tad dated in spots, like the bathroom tiles could use a refresh, but at 4 stars and an 8.8 rating, it’s punching above its weight for value, especially off-peak when Melbourne’s winters keep the crowds away.
All in all, if you’re after a spot that lets you dip into Melbourne’s beachy side without the chaos of the CBD or tourist traps, the Marlin’s a gem. It’s ideal for couples or small families who want to bike along the Bay Trail (rentals are easy to grab nearby) or just chill with a sunset walk to Point Ormond. I left feeling like I’d actually lived a slice of local life – you know, grabbing coffee at Elwood Village cafes where baristas remember your order – rather than just passing through. Sure, summer rates spike a bit with the influx from interstate, but book mid-week and it’s a steal. I’d go back in a heartbeat; it’s one of those places that sticks with you, waves and all.
Exploring Melbourne blends laneway espresso haunts, Victorian arcades, and seaside boardwalks alive with street performers.

What Our Guests Say
Perfect apartment across the road from the beach with great walking tracks and parks to enjoy! Loved the apartment and the location
Comac/Borlos ....March 3025 trip Everything was perfect ... the apartment was amazing.. so convenient and close to restaurants and shops . And with the beach just across the road, we couldn't have asked for anything better.
What could be improved: Had a problem with the pushdown plug in the bathroom on first night but it eventually corrected itself. It really wasn't much of an issue after that..the main road in front of property was very busy which meant it was noisy on the patio but as we spent a lot of time out exploring it really didn't affect us
Very enjoyable Location for our purpose
What could be improved: Nothing
Very good
Wonderfully equipped and comfortable apartment right across from the beach and near local shops. What could be improved: Only suggestion for improvement would be tv in main bedroom or increase wifi strength at rear of apartment (was fine in main area).
