Hotel Description
You know, the first time I pulled up to the Mercure Melbourne Albert Park on Queens Road, I was already half in love with the spot just from the drive in. It’s tucked right there on the edge of Albert Park – yeah, that massive green lung of the city with the lake and the F1 track – so if you’re coming from the airport via the Tullamarine Freeway, you zip down onto St Kilda Road and boom, you’re there in about 30 minutes, traffic willing. I mean, Melbourne’s notorious for its peak-hour snarls, but honestly, arriving mid-afternoon felt like a breeze. The building itself has that solid, no-nonsense vibe – not flashy like some of the CBD high-rises, but with these big windows that let in heaps of natural light. Check-in was straightforward; the staff were friendly enough, though a bit harried during my stay (it was right after the Australian Open, so the place was buzzing with tennis fans). I grabbed my keycard, dumped my bags in a room on the fifth floor – overlooking the park, which was a nice touch – and immediately noticed how the air had that fresh, eucalyptus-tinged scent wafting in from outside. The bed was comfy, queen-sized with those crisp white sheets that make you want to crash right away after a long flight, but fair warning, the decor’s a tad dated, like they’ve been meaning to refresh it since the early 2000s. Still, it felt clean and functional, with a decent mini-fridge stocked with overpriced water – you know, the usual hotel trap.
What really sold me on this place, though, was how it slots right into that sweet spot between the city hustle and some proper downtime. Step out the door and you’re a stone’s throw from the Albert Park Lake paths – I went for a jog one morning, dodging the locals with their dogs and the occasional swan, and it was blissfully quiet before 8 a.m., even if the road noise picks up later in the day (Queens Road can get a bit revvy with commuters heading to South Yarra or Prahran). If you’re into food, hop on the tram from right nearby – the 58 line zips you straight to Chapel Street in like 10 minutes for killer cafes and vintage shops, or down to St Kilda Beach for fish and chips by the water. Back at the hotel, the pool area’s a hidden gem; it’s indoor, heated, with these comfy loungers where I spent an afternoon reading and pretending I wasn’t jet-lagged. Breakfast buffet’s solid too – fresh croissants, decent coffee (not the best in Melbourne, but hey, it’s included), and they do a mean smashed avo on toast. Oh, and parking – if you’re driving, they’ve got an underground lot, but it fills up fast during events like the Grand Prix in March, so book ahead or you’ll be circling like I did once.
All in all, I’d say this Mercure’s a reliable pick if you’re after that 4-star comfort without the pretension, especially for a short stay. It’s not flawless – the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the rooms, and service feels a touch impersonal when it’s packed – but for the price and location, you can’t really complain. If you’re visiting Melbourne for the vibes rather than the glamour, this spot lets you dip into the action (city center’s just a 15-minute tram ride away) while having a peaceful base to retreat to. I left feeling like I’d gotten a real slice of local life – watching the sunset over the park from my balcony, with the distant hum of the city fading out. Worth it, I reckon, for travelers who want practical over posh.

Bit unfortunate that there were no usb points, and the bathroom was dated, pleasant enough stay, but we couldn't turn the heater down and cooling was non-existent… Buffet breakfast was available with the room and was extensive…
