Mercure Melbourne Therry Street Overview

You know, I stumbled upon the Mercure Melbourne Therry Street kind of by accident last time I was in Melbourne – I was rushing from a meeting in the CBD and needed a spot that wasn’t too far from the action but wouldn’t break the bank. It’s tucked away on Therry Street, right in that bustling pocket between Lonsdale and Little Bourke, which means you’re basically a stone’s throw from Chinatown’s dim sum joints and the Queen Victoria Market. Honestly, if you’re into that early-morning market vibe, with the smell of fresh coffee and sizzling bacon wafting through the air, this place is perfect – I grabbed a flat white from a vendor there one dawn and it set me up for the day. Parking’s a bit of a hassle, though; the hotel has a small undercover spot, but it’s first-come-first-served, and with all the one-way streets around, I ended up circling for 10 minutes before scoring one. Check-in was smooth, mind you – the staff were friendly Aussies, chatty without being overbearing, and they hooked me up with a room upgrade because it was off-peak in winter. The lobby’s got this modern, understated feel, with comfy leather chairs and a faint scent of eucalyptus from their diffusers, which sort of nods to that Melbourne laneway chic without trying too hard.

Stepping into the room – I had one on the higher floors overlooking Therry Street – it was clean and functional, nothing flashy but way better than some of the stuffy chains I’ve stayed in. The bed was plush, with those crisp white sheets that make you sink right in after a long day wandering the city, and the bathroom had decent pressure in the shower, which is a godsend when you’re rinsing off the grime from a tram ride down Swanston Street. There’s a mini-fridge and a kettle for your morning tea – I mean, who doesn’t love a quick cuppa while watching the world wake up below? It’s a 4-star spot, rated around 7.4, which feels about right; the Wi-Fi was reliable for streaming, but it did glitch a couple times during peak evening hours when everyone’s online. Noise-wise, it’s not bad for the location – you might hear the occasional tram ding or late-night revelers from the nearby pubs on Little Lonsdale, but the double-glazed windows keep most of it out. Breakfast in the on-site cafe was solid, with fresh croissants and eggs any way you like ’em, though it’s not included unless you book that package – worth it if you’re not keen on venturing out in the rain, which Melbourne loves to throw at you unexpectedly.

All in all, if you’re visiting Melbourne for the culture or business and want somewhere central without the five-star price tag, this Mercure fits the bill nicely. It’s close enough to hop on a tram to Federation Square or walk to the State Library (that dome is stunning, by the way), but quiet enough at night to actually sleep. I wouldn’t call it luxurious – the decor’s a tad generic in spots – but it’s got that reliable charm that makes you feel at home. Next time I’m in town during the busy summer festival season, I’d book here again; just remember to pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper, and hit up the market for some cheap eats to save on room service. Totally recommend it for travelers who value location over frills.

Good bed and shower, they do have a special discount to park your car in the parking behind the building that has access to the elevator of the hotel but you need to ask the voucher for it, this parking makes easier for luggage and I felt safe for parking. Hotel is steps from Victoria market and easy to walk around CBD.
