Modern Magic on Yarra River with Resort Amenities
You know, I stumbled upon Modern Magic on Yarra River during a quick getaway to Melbourne last spring, and honestly, it kind of snuck up on me as one of those spots that feels like a hidden gem in Docklands.
You know, I stumbled upon Modern Magic on Yarra River during a quick getaway to Melbourne last spring, and honestly, it kind of snuck up on me as one of those spots that feels like a hidden gem in Docklands. Pulling up to the place on Harbour Esplanade – yeah, that stretch right by the water where the trams rattle past every few minutes – I was hit with this sleek, modern facade that screams “urban resort” without trying too hard. It’s tucked away from the CBD hustle, but close enough that you can hop on the 70 tram and be at Flinders Street Station in like 10 minutes, or wander over to the District Docklands shops for a coffee fix. I mean, if you’re flying in, it’s a breeze from Tullamarine – about 25 minutes by cab, and parking’s actually decent here with their underground spots, though it fills up quick on weekends when the footy crowds swarm Marvel Stadium nearby. My first night, I checked in around dusk, and the lobby had this fresh, citrusy scent wafting from some diffuser – probably to mask the faint salty tang from the Yarra outside – and the staff were all smiles, sorting my late arrival without a fuss. No long lines or rigid vibes; it felt more like chatting with mates who know the drill.
What really sold me, though, was how they blend that resort feel with the gritty charm of Melbourne’s waterfront. The rooms? Spacious and crisp, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river – I woke up to joggers along the promenade and the soft hum of ferries chugging by, which is peaceful in the off-season but can get a tad noisy during peak summer when the tourists flock to Southbank for events. (Pro tip: ask for a higher floor if you’re sensitive to that; mine on the fifth was just right.) They’ve got this infinity pool on the rooftop that honestly feels like a mini-oasis – heated, with views stretching to the Bolte Bridge – and a spa area where I treated myself to a massage that melted away the jet lag. Breakfast in the on-site cafe was solid, too: think smashed avo on sourdough with locally roasted coffee from some roaster in nearby West Melbourne. It’s not flawless – the gym’s a bit compact if you’re into serious workouts, and Wi-Fi dipped once during a rainstorm – but for a 4-star joint with a 9.2 rating, it’s punching above its weight. Well, sort of; the resort amenities like the sauna and outdoor lounge make it feel more luxurious than your average city hotel, especially after a day exploring Bourke Street’s laneways or catching a show at the Arts Centre.
All in all, if you’re after a spot that lets you dip into Melbourne’s vibe without the constant buzz – say, during the quieter shoulder seasons like autumn when the leaves turn along the river paths – this place is a winner. It’s got that magic balance of modern perks and real accessibility, making it ideal for couples or solo travelers who want to unwind after pounding the pavement. I left feeling recharged, and yeah, I’d book it again in a heartbeat – just maybe pack earplugs for those early boat horns if you’re not a morning person.
Savvy travelers reserve a hotel in Melbourne before White Night festivals bathe the skyline in art projections.

Location for us was brilliant as we were attending concerts at Marvel Stadium . Easy getting around with the tram service right outside the building. And also within walking distance to the venue.
It was very handy to the free tram service. A little out of the way to restaurants. The unit was clean. Had everything you need to cook with. Lovely views from the second bedroom.
