‘Modern Minimalism’ Slate Chic in the City Overview
I remember pulling up to the Modern Minimalism Slate Chic in the City on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, one of those days where the trams are packed and the air smells like fresh coffee from the Errol Street cafes just a block away. It’s tucked right in North Melbourne, on that quiet stretch near Arden Street, which honestly makes it a gem if you’re trying to dodge the CBD chaos but still want easy access. I hopped off the 57 tram from Flinders Street – takes about 10 minutes, tops – and there it was, this sleek four-star spot with its slate-gray facade blending right into the urban vibe. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were these laid-back locals who chatted about the best spots for a flat white nearby, no scripted spiel or anything. Well, except for the parking – it’s street-only around here, and it can get tricky during peak hours, like when the footy crowds flood in for games at the nearby Marvel Stadium. But hey, that’s Melbourne for you; just plan ahead or grab an Uber if you’re lugging bags.
Stepping into the room, it hit me how true to its name this place is – modern minimalism all the way, with these cool slate accents on the walls that feel smooth and almost cool to the touch, like running your hand over river stones. My room overlooked a little courtyard (ask for one on the upper floors if you can; the lower ones pick up a bit of street noise from the early morning deliveries to the Queen Vic Market, which is literally a 15-minute walk away). The bed was plush, king-sized, and honestly, after a day wandering the laneways, sinking into those crisp white sheets was pure bliss – though I will say, the minimalist design means storage is sort of limited, so if you’re an overpacker like me, you might end up living out of your suitcase. The bathroom? Spot on, with rain showers that steam up just right and eco-friendly toiletries that actually smell fresh, not that fake hotel floral stuff. There’s a small gym downstairs – nothing fancy, but good for a quick sweat – and the rooftop terrace is where it’s at in the evenings, especially during summer when the sun sets late and you can hear the distant hum of the city without being in the thick of it. Oh, and breakfast – they do this continental spread with local jams and avo on toast; it’s not gourmet, but it sets you up nicely for exploring.
Look, with an 8.8 rating, this place isn’t pretending to be a luxury palace, but it’s got that authentic North Melbourne charm – close enough to hop over to the market for fresh produce or catch a gig at the Corner Hotel in Richmond (just a short tram ride). I mean, if you’re visiting in winter, bundle up because those slate vibes can feel a tad chilly, but come spring, it’s perfect for basing yourself while discovering the area’s street art and hidden bars. I’d go back in a heartbeat; it’s the kind of spot that feels like a smart insider choice, not some tourist trap. If you’re after a no-fuss stay that lets you live like a local, this is it – just don’t forget to wander down to the North Melbourne Town Hall for that historic feel, it’s right around the corner.

Reviews of ‘Modern Minimalism’ Slate Chic in the City
Overall, I like this accommodation, I will consider to stay here if I come to Melbourne next time. – Jennifer from Taiwan – 20 April 2025 (9/10)
Great location Melbourne university is only 10 mins walking distance,Woolworths is also near by. Tram stop is just downstairs on the street, it’s very convenient to go anywhere you want to visit. Mattresses are very comfortable, sufficient cookware for family. I will consider to stay here if I come to Melbourne next time.
What could be improved: The only weakness is the window is not well soundproofed. Because the property is face to the street, there is a bit noisy in the midnight if you are sensitive to the sound.Superb – Daniel from Australia – 4 October 2024 (9/10)
Location great, easy access to CDB and Trams
What could be improved: Issue with having to pay $600 security bond in lieu of credit card details. Always felt like a scam as wasnt through the booking.com appBeautiful property in brilliant location. Facilities were exceptional. – Helen from Australia – 29 January 2024 (9/10)
Electric bed in one room made it easy for my friend with mobility restrictions. Two bathrooms, three bedrooms worked well. Right on tram line for the city, the zoo and easy walking distance to the Vic markets. Free car park was a winner. Loved the recliner chairs in the lounge room. Well appointed kitchen.
What could be improved: Had a bit of trouble communicating about key pickup, but once resolved, Audrey was very helpful and the stay was awesome.Great place to stay – Eric from Australia – 17 February 2024 (8/10)
