Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to Nicholson’s Nest on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, the kind where the tram tracks on Nicholson Street glisten and everyone’s hustling with umbrellas. Fitzroy’s got that effortless cool vibe, right? It’s not your polished CBD spot; it’s more like wandering into a neighborhood where street art pops up on every corner and the air smells like fresh-roasted coffee from those hole-in-the-wall cafes on Brunswick Street. The place is tucked away in a converted building – sort of an old warehouse vibe, I think – and check-in was a breeze, just a quick code entry on the door since it’s more of a studio setup than a full hotel. No fuss with a front desk, which was honestly refreshing after a long flight, though I did fumble with the app for a minute (pro tip: download it before you arrive). Stepping inside, the space felt surprisingly roomy for a balcony studio – high ceilings, exposed brick walls that give it that authentic Fitzroy edge, and a kitchenette stocked with basics like a Nespresso machine and some local teas. The bed was comfy, queen-sized with crisp linens, but fair warning, the bathroom’s on the compact side, like a lot of these inner-city pads.

What really sold me was the balcony – oh man, it’s got views over the treetops toward the city skyline, and on a clear evening, you can sip a glass of Yarra Valley wine (grab some from the bottle shop on Gertrude Street, it’s just a five-minute stroll) while listening to the distant hum of trams and chatter from nearby bars. Fitzroy gets lively, especially on weekends when the crowds spill out from spots like Naked for Satan or the Everleigh – great for people-watching, but it can get a bit noisy until around midnight. I mean, if you’re a light sleeper, pack earplugs; otherwise, it’s part of the charm. During the day, it’s perfect for exploring: I wandered down to the Fitzroy Gardens (not the big one in the city, the local version with its quirky sculptures) or hit up the vintage shops on Smith Street. Parking’s a nightmare here – street spots are metered and competitive, so I ditched the car at a nearby garage for about 20 bucks a day and just walked or hopped on the 96 tram. The studio’s got decent Wi-Fi, which was clutch for remote work, and the air con kept things cool during that unexpected heatwave in spring – Melbourne weather, am I right?

Honestly, if you’re after a slice of real Melbourne life without the tourist gloss, Nicholson’s Nest is a gem. It’s not flawless – the stairs to the upper level might be a drag with heavy luggage, and there’s no on-site laundry (though there’s a laundromat two blocks away) – but at 4 stars with an 8.6 rating, it punches above its weight for the price. I’d go back in a heartbeat for a solo trip or with a partner; it’s got that funky, lived-in feel that makes you forget you’re in a rental. Just time it for shoulder season like autumn if you want quieter streets – summer festivals pack the place out. You won’t regret basing yourself here; it’s like having your own little nest in one of the city’s coolest suburbs.

Lovely, clean & comfortable little unit on 1st floor (lift & stairwell). Loved the kitchen with everything you need to cook, make brekky etc. Comfy bed. Quiet. Secure (fob key for entry in to the building, and key for the unit door). There were board games, books, spare blankets, towels etc. Fantastic location. Beautiful old building outside, modern inside. Loved that there were 2 entrances, one from Nicholson Street and the other, Royal Lane. Easy access to public transport with trams on Nicholson or Gertrude Streets. Exhibition Building, Museum & parks across the road. Brunswick & Smith Streets close by. Would definitely stay again.
