Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to Oh So Collingwood on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, the kind where the tram tracks on Smith Street glisten and everyone’s ducking into cafes for flat whites. It’s tucked right in the heart of Collingwood, just off Wellington Street, where the vibe shifts from industrial warehouses to those colorful Victorian terraces that make this suburb feel like a living postcard. Honestly, finding parking was a bit of a hassle – inner-city spots like this always are, especially on weekends when the Collingwood Farmers Market is buzzing a few blocks away – but once I handed over the keys to the valet (yeah, they have that, which is a lifesaver), it was smooth sailing. The lobby isn’t some grand affair; it’s more like stepping into a friend’s stylish apartment, with exposed brick walls that smell faintly of fresh paint and coffee from the in-house espresso machine. I mean, the check-in was quick and chatty – the staff actually asked about my plans for the day, not just the scripted “welcome” spiel – and before I knew it, I was up in my room, unpacking with the distant hum of the city outside.

What really sets this place apart, though, is how it nails that boutique feel without trying too hard. My room was on the quieter side facing a laneway – well, quieter for Collingwood standards, anyway; you might hear the occasional tram ding or laughter from nearby bars like The Tote if you crack the window at night, but the double-glazed panes keep most of it out. The bed? Oh man, those high-thread-count sheets felt like sinking into a cloud after a day wandering Fitzroy’s street art alleys or grabbing tacos at Easey’s (it’s literally a five-minute walk). They’ve got these little touches that matter – like USB ports everywhere, rainfall showers that actually have decent pressure (not always a given in older buildings), and a mini-fridge stocked with local goodies from the Queen Victoria Market, which is just a short tram ride away. Breakfast isn’t included, but the on-site cafe does killer avocado toast with poached eggs – sourced from nearby farms, they say – and it’s open late for that post-Yarra River stroll snack. I sort of wish the gym was bigger (it’s compact, more for a quick yoga session than heavy lifting), but hey, with all the walking around here – think Gertrude Street’s vintage shops or the Abbotsford Convent for some green space – you won’t miss it much. And in summer, when Melbourne heats up, the rooftop terrace becomes this hidden gem for sunset drinks, though it can get crowded on Fridays.

Look, if you’re the type who wants to dive into Melbourne’s creative underbelly without the tourist crowds of the CBD, Oh So Collingwood is your spot – it’s got that 9.7 rating for a reason, earned from real stays like mine. Families might find it a tad trendy (no kids’ club or anything), but for couples or solo travelers chasing authenticity, it’s gold. I’ve stayed in fancier joints, but this one sticks with you – the way the morning light filters through those big windows, or how the staff remembers your coffee order on day two. Next time I’m in town for the Australian Open (it’s super close to the arenas, by the way), I’m booking again. Just pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper during footy season – Collingwood Magpies fans can get rowdy. Worth every penny, though.

Reviews

  • Incredible location if you love the Collingwood/Fitzroy vibe. Comfortable, clean and relaxing. – Ainsley from Australia – 3 June 2025 (9/10)

Location is excellent. Apartment is really well appointed with everything you could need. Super comfortable and really nicely decorated. Felt really good in the space as it was full of light, even on a grey old Melbourne day.

What could be improved: Having to pick the key up from the convenience store was slighly annoying as it was a 7 min walk from the apartment which was not ideal with several bags in tow. But if you dont have a heap of luggage this would not be an issue at all. A key safe at the property would be ideal but I get that might not always be possible.

  • 10/10 – Samantha from Australia – 19 January 2025 (10/10)

It was beautiful, light and airy and the location was the best. Loved living in the trees in the Tv room.

What could be improved: Mmm. Maybe the dishwasher as I couldn’t work out how to turn it on. This was me though as I couldn’t be bothered reading the instructions.

  • We went on a friends getaway to explore Melbourne and this was the perfect spot for us! – Anonymous from Australia – 1 July 2025 (10/10)

The apartment had amazing natural light, it felt like a home. The location was so convenient and the balcony was the perfect spot for morning coffee.

What could be improved: Everything was perfect!
