Orange Stay at Collins Wharf Overview
I remember pulling up to Orange Stay at Collins Wharf on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon—honestly, the kind where you question why you didn’t pack an extra layer—and thinking, wow, this spot in Docklands has that sleek, almost futuristic vibe you don’t get in the older parts of the city. It’s right there at 915 Collins Street, smack on the edge of the Yarra River, with those massive cargo ships gliding by like they’re part of the decor. I mean, if you’re coming from the airport via the Tullamarine Freeway, it’s an easy shot across the Bolte Bridge, but watch out for the peak-hour snarl around Spencer Street; that’s when the trams start clanging non-stop and everything slows to a crawl. Check-in was a breeze, though—staff were chatty without being over-the-top, handed over the keycard with a quick tip about the best coffee spot down on Bourke Street (it’s that little hole-in-the-wall called Auction Rooms, by the way, if you’re into flat whites that actually taste like they’re from Melbourne). My room—well, apartment, really—had this massive window overlooking the wharf, and at dusk, the water reflects the city lights in a way that’s sort of mesmerizing, you know? But fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, the occasional hum from the nearby port might sneak in, especially on windy nights.
What really sets this place apart, though—and I say this as someone who’s bounced around a few spots in Melbourne—is how it feels like a proper home base without skimping on the hotel perks. It’s rated 8.4 for good reason; the four-star setup includes these fully kitted-out kitchens with actual decent cookware (none of that flimsy stuff you find in budget stays), so I whipped up a brekkie using goodies from the Queen Victoria Market, which is just a quick tram ride away on the 35 or 48 line—pro tip, grab a Myki card at Southern Cross Station if you’re new here. The beds are comfy, with that crisp linen smell that lingers, and there’s a gym downstairs that’s not too crowded in the mornings, though it gets busier around 7 AM when the corporate crowd from the nearby office towers rolls in. Oh, and parking—yeah, it’s undercover and secure, but spots can fill up fast during events at Marvel Stadium (it’s literally a 10-minute walk across the footbridge), so book ahead if you’re driving. I appreciated the little touches, like the free laundry facilities—saved me a fortune after a muddy day exploring the Docklands trails—and the balcony where you can sip a local craft beer while watching the ferries putter along. It’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi dipped a bit during peak evenings, and the area can feel a tad quiet on weeknights if you’re craving that bustling laneway energy of the CBD, but that’s Docklands for you—modern, a bit isolated, but refreshingly open.
All in all, if you’re after a spot that’s got that balance of city access without the constant chaos—think easy strolls to places like the District Docklands for shopping or grabbing dumplings at one of those hidden spots on Little Bourke Street—I’d say Orange Stay is a solid pick. It’s great for families or longer stays, especially in summer when the waterfront comes alive with markets and outdoor gigs, or even in winter when you just want to hole up with a view. Honestly, it left me wishing I’d booked an extra night; there’s something about that wharf-side calm that sticks with you.
To explore Melbourne during the mild spring months from September to November, tourists need early preparation as this cosmopolitan city draws visitors eager to discover its famous laneways, rooftop bars, and renowned sporting venues.

It was super clean and tidy, very nice design and layout of the apartment. It was a good location, still in the free tram zone and not too far to travel into the middle of the city. The staff are super helpful when you check in! The pool was excellent it was very modern and warm, there’s also a steam room.

Everything. Great location, nice & quiet. Good security, loved having a gym & swimming pool on site, both of which I used. Had all the things I needed in the apartment & one of the most comfortable beds have ever slept in. And, wow, what a view.
