‘Orangerie’ A Stunning Shoe Factory Conversion
I stumbled upon the Orangerie while wandering through Brunswick last spring – you know, that vibrant suburb just north of Melbourne's CBD, where Sydney Road buzzes with kebab shops and vintage stores that locals swear by.
I stumbled upon the Orangerie while wandering through Brunswick last spring – you know, that vibrant suburb just north of Melbourne’s CBD, where Sydney Road buzzes with kebab shops and vintage stores that locals swear by. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from a place billed as a “stunning shoe factory conversion,” but pulling up to this old industrial building on a quiet side street off Lygon (yeah, the one with all those Italian eateries spilling over from Carlton), I was immediately hooked. The facade still has that gritty, red-brick charm from its factory days, but they’ve transformed it into this sleek 4-star spot without losing the soul. Check-in was a breeze – the staff, a mix of laid-back Melburnians, handed over my key with a quick chat about the best nearby tram stops (take the 19 to zip into the city in under 15 minutes). No fuss, no long lines, though I will say, if you’re driving, parking’s mostly on-street and can get tricky during peak hours when everyone’s hitting the markets at CERES just a few blocks away.
What really sets the Orangerie apart, though – and I mean this after crashing there for a weekend – is how they’ve nailed that industrial-meets-cozy vibe inside. My room had these massive exposed beams and polished concrete floors that echoed a bit when I first walked in (a minor nitpick if you’re a light sleeper, but earplugs sorted it), paired with plush bedding that smelled faintly of fresh linen and eucalyptus – like they’ve bottled that Aussie bush essence. The bathroom was a highlight, with rain showers that actually deliver on pressure, and little touches like locally sourced soaps from some artisan down in Fitzroy. You know what surprised me? The communal areas downstairs, where they’ve kept original factory windows letting in tons of natural light, and there’s this courtyard garden – sort of an oasis amid the urban hum, perfect for sipping a flat white in the morning while listening to the distant trams rattling by. It’s not flawless; the Wi-Fi dipped a tad during evenings when the place fills up (mostly with creative types escaping the city grind), but overall, with a 9/10 rating, it feels earned. And seasonally? Come summer, it’s lively with nearby festivals, but winter’s when it’s blissfully quiet, ideal for holing up.
Look, if you’re after a spot that feels authentically Melbourne – not some cookie-cutter chain – the Orangerie is it. It’s close enough to hop on a bike path to the Royal Park for a jog, or wander to those hidden gem cafes on Sydney Road for baklava that rivals anything in the Middle East. I left feeling like I’d discovered a secret, and honestly, for the price, it’s a steal compared to downtown hotels. Just pack light layers – Melbourne weather, you know? – and you’ll thank me later.
Melbourne’s apartments welcome families with spacious lounges, playground courtyards, and quick rides to beachside St Kilda.

What Our Guests Say
Superb
A great trip to a lovely Brunswick property Easy comms with host, great location close to shops and transport, property is well stocked with everything you need and good working facilities, beds were comfy, bathrooms spotless, tv and speakers easy to connect to and face washer provided, thank you. The courtyard with the the orange trees and greenery was lovely. I was impressed too by little touches like having both a digital and physical house information pack and having more than the standard 4 glasses, plates etc. Overall a great property in a great location, you won't be disappointed.
What could be improved: One improvement, towels were on the thin side, could be plusher.
