Park Squire Motor Inn & Serviced Apartments Overview
You know, I pulled up to the Park Squire Motor Inn & Serviced Apartments on Flemington Road one drizzly afternoon last spring, and right away it felt like one of those reliable spots that doesn’t try too hard to impress but just gets the job done. It’s tucked in that leafy stretch of Parkville, you know, where the trams rattle by every few minutes heading straight into the CBD – super handy if you’re popping down to Queen Vic Market for some fresh produce or catching a game at the MCG. I mean, it’s not smack in the middle of the action, but honestly, that’s part of the charm; you’re close enough to the buzz without the constant honking from Lygon Street’s chaos. The place has that classic motor inn setup – drive right up to your door, which was a lifesaver when I was lugging bags after a long flight into Tullamarine. Check-in was a breeze, too; the staff were these friendly locals who chatted about the best coffee spots nearby, like that little joint on Gatehouse Street where the flat whites are killer. Oh, and parking? Free and plentiful, which is gold in Melbourne where spots vanish faster than a sunny day in winter.
What really sold me on the Park Squire, though, was how it blends motel convenience with those serviced apartment perks – think full kitchenettes that let you whip up your own brekkie instead of shelling out for overpriced hotel eggs. My room was spacious, with a comfy queen bed that didn’t creak like some places I’ve crashed in, and big windows overlooking the garden area (well, sort of a garden; it’s more like a patch of green with some barbecues that folks fire up on weekends). The decor’s a bit retro – you know, those beige carpets and wooden accents that scream ’80s Aussie motel – but it’s spotless, and the bathroom had that fresh, lemony clean smell that makes you feel at home. I stayed during a quiet midweek in autumn, so noise from Flemington Road was minimal, just the occasional whoosh of cars, nothing that kept me up. If you’re here for the hospitals – Royal Children’s is literally a stone’s throw away – or visiting uni kids at Melbourne Uni across the park, it’s ideal. There’s even a small pool out back that I dipped into one warmer day, though it’s nothing fancy, more for a quick cool-off after wandering Royal Park’s trails. Actually, speaking of which, I loved jogging there in the mornings; the eucalyptus scent and kookaburra calls make it feel worlds away from the city grind.
All in all, with its 4-star rating sitting at a solid 7.9, the Park Squire’s that understated gem for travelers who want value without the fluff. It’s not going to wow you with spa treatments or skyline views – let’s be real, the outlook is more suburban than spectacular – but if you’re road-tripping through Victoria or need a base for exploring Melbourne’s northside, it’s spot on. I paid a fair price for a week, cooked my own meals to save a buck, and left feeling like I’d found a little secret. Just watch out for peak times like during the Grand Prix; it books up quick with all the race fans spilling over from the track. Worth it, though – I’d go back in a heartbeat.
