Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to the Pegasus Apart-Hotel on A’Beckett Street – you know, that bustling stretch right in the thick of Melbourne’s CBD, just a stone’s throw from the Queen Victoria Market where you can snag fresh oysters or those killer Vietnamese rolls on a Saturday morning. It’s tucked away enough that you don’t feel like you’re in the middle of the chaos, but honestly, step out the door and you’re basically at the doorstep of RMIT University or Flagstaff Gardens for a quick breather amid the gum trees. I arrived mid-afternoon during peak hour, and yeah, finding street parking was a bit of a hassle – typical inner-city Melbourne, with all those trams clanging by on Elizabeth Street – but the valet option sorted it out without much fuss. Check-in was straightforward; the staff were these laid-back Aussies who chatted about the best nearby coffee spots (pro tip: head to Auction Rooms on Little Errol Street for a flat white that doesn’t disappoint). The lobby’s got this modern, no-frills vibe – think sleek tiles underfoot and a faint whiff of eucalyptus from the air freshener, which sort of masks the urban hum outside.
What really sold me on the place, though, was the apart-hotel setup – I mean, these aren’t your standard cramped hotel rooms; they’re proper apartments with full kitchens, which came in handy after a long day wandering through the laneways. My unit on the fifth floor had these big windows overlooking the skyline, and at dusk, you’d catch the sun dipping behind the high-rises, casting this golden glow on the textured concrete walls. The beds were comfy enough, with those plush pillows that make you sink right in, but fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, the occasional siren or late-night revelers from the bars on Queen Street might filter through – it’s the city, after all, not some quiet suburb like Fitzroy. Amenities-wise, there’s a rooftop pool that’s a godsend in summer (we’re talking January heatwaves when the asphalt practically melts), and the gym’s decent for a quick workout, though it gets crowded around 7 AM with the local office crowd. I appreciated the little touches, like the in-room washer-dryer – saved me from lugging clothes to a laundromat – and the free Wi-Fi that actually held up for streaming without buffering. Oh, and breakfast? They do a simple buffet downstairs with fresh pastries and decent eggs, but I usually skipped it for a stroll to the market instead.
All in all, if you’re hitting Melbourne for a mix of work and play – say, catching a show at the Comedy Theatre or just exploring the street art in Hosier Lane – Pegasus is a solid pick without breaking the bank. It’s got that 4-star polish with an 8.3 rating that feels earned, especially for families or longer stays where you want space to spread out. Sure, it could use a bit more soundproofing, but for the location and value, I’d book it again in a heartbeat. Just time it right – avoid the Grand Prix weekend if you hate crowds, but come during the food festival season and you’ll thank me.

Considering that this was one of the cheapest places that I found for a nights break in the city – I was expecting it to be budget but it didn't feel like that – it was great for what we paid for it. Clean and had everything we needed for a nights stay
