Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon the Penthouse Apartment Collingwood almost by accident last time I was in Melbourne – I mean, I was crashing with friends in Fitzroy but needed my own space for a few nights, and this spot on Peel Street just popped up. It’s tucked away in that vibrant pocket of Collingwood, right where the old warehouses meet those trendy converted lofts, and honestly, pulling up to 803/47 Peel St felt like stepping into a hidden gem. The building itself is modern without trying too hard – think sleek lines and big windows that catch the afternoon sun bouncing off the Yarra River in the distance. Check-in was a breeze; it’s one of those self-contained setups where you get a code texted to you, no fussing with a front desk, which is perfect after a long flight into Tullamarine. But fair warning, parking around here can be a nightmare – Collingwood’s streets are narrow and always buzzing, so if you’re driving, scope out the spots on Smith Street early or just tram it in from the city.
What really sold me on this place – and it’s rated a solid 8.4 for good reason – is how it feels like a proper Melbourne apartment rather than some sterile hotel room. Up on the penthouse level, you’ve got these killer views over the rooftops toward the CBD skyline, especially at dusk when the lights start twinkling and you can hear the faint hum of trams rattling down Brunswick Street below. The space is generous for a 4-star spot: a full kitchen with that fancy induction stove (I whipped up brekkie with goodies from the nearby Collingwood Farmers Market on Saturdays – fresh sourdough and avos, you can’t beat it), a comfy lounge area with plush cushions that smell faintly of eucalyptus from the laundry detergent they use, and a bedroom that’s quiet enough to actually sleep through the night. Well, mostly – there’s a bit of street noise if you’re a light sleeper, what with the pubs on Gertrude Street spilling out late, but earplugs sorted that for me. It’s got all the little touches travelers crave, like fast Wi-Fi for streaming your shows and a balcony where you can sip coffee while watching the magpies swoop around – oh, and in summer, it stays cool with that cross-breeze from the open plan.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants to live like a local without the hassle of Airbnb roulette, this penthouse is a winner. It’s smack in the heart of Collingwood’s creative scene – wander two blocks to Smith Street for killer cafes like Proud Mary or hit up the street art alleys off Johnston – but still just a quick 10-minute tram ride to the MCG or Federation Square. I left feeling like I’d gotten a real taste of Melbourne’s inner-north vibe, you know? Sure, it’s not perfect (those stairs to the penthouse if the lift’s slow might test you after a big night out), but for couples or solo explorers chasing that apartment-style comfort in a buzzing suburb, it’s worth every penny. I’d book it again in a heartbeat, especially off-peak when the area’s a bit quieter and you can snag those views all to yourself.
